tylosin for brown hair in old dogs and for lick sores
i found that brown hair occuring on my dogs was not just cosmetic as sometimes it lead to lick sores that were hard to contain. no vet had any idea of what it was or how to treat it but years ago it was an ingredient in angel eyes that dog show people used to clear up the brown stain on show dogs eye areas. so I tried the 25mg and it worked but took a long time. now I am using the 100mg every other day and I see the gradual change from brown hair back to white. it occurs mostly in dogs over 5 years old in my kennel but is stil leffective for eye stains in my show dogs if I am showing a white faced dog. I recommend using it for lick sores. I am not a vet, but have been a breeder for 35 years and am an MD physician.

Hard to review meds
We had Tylosin compounded as my dog wouldnt take the plain powder. Well, this must still be bitter, because she hates this too (she takes other meds just fine). Would be nice if it could be flavored. It does the job, but giving it is still a chore.

Compunded meds are the way to go
From UndisclosedComments about Tylosin (Compounded)My dog has Protein Losing Enteropathy and needs to take Tylan Powder twice a day. Had a hard time giving it to him in powder format which seems to be the only way my vet would prescribe it. He'd take one whiff and turn his nose up. Having it compounded made my life a lot easier. Less mess with the correct dosage going where it needed to. -
I did buy this product again and will continue to do so!

From undisclosedComments about Tylosin (Compounded)The tylosin helped my dog recover nicely and in a timely manner. I don't think that i should have to make an account to the website to purchase a product. -

My dog has IBD and cannot tolerate most animal proteins. Can you fill this is vegetarian capsules??
-
Unfortunately, VetRxDirect does not compound Tylosin capsules using vegetarian capsules.

The prescription states 1/3 teaspoon of tylosin soluble in the morning over food. Will it be okay to put in with 2 Tablespoons no salt chicken broth? She eats dry food.?
-
Please consult your veterinarian for recommendations on administration techniques for the tylosin. The pet would need to consume the full amount of the broth to ensure that they are getting all of the medication. Tylosin should not be premixed with the broth in advance and stored for long periods of time.

Our dog takes tylosin in powder form mixed with pumpkin. When boarding the dog, can tylosin be mixed with the pumpkin and refrigerated for the boarder to administer throughout the week? Will refrigeration with food diminish effectiveness??
-
It is not known if mixing Tylosin powder with pumpkin will decrease the effectiveness. Please consult with your veterinarian for administration suggestions.

Can you tell me what size pill for a 100 mg cap? I want to see if I can get my RX set for online refills but need to make sure that my cat does not end up with a HUGE cap that I cannot get down her. Needs to take 100 mg for IBD daily. I have a current RX from the vet to send or attach.?
-
Tylosin is compounded in a standardized size 3 capsule which is 15.9mm long and 5.82mm in diameter. If you are concerned with this capsule being too big for your cat please contact your veterinarian.

My cat is currently taking 150 mg of tylan. The capsule total weight was 150 mg of the powder. Our vet then changed their pharmacy and we received another refill of her medication. This time the capsules were twice the size and still 150 mg of tylosin, but 300 mg in total weight due to "proprietary filler". Does your tylosin compound include this filler as well? The 300 mg capsules are too large for me cat to swallow and seems unsafe to try to pill her with them. So the main question would be is would I have to order the 300 mg capsule I order to obtain 150 mg worth of the medicinal part of the powder??
-
The strength you would need to order is the 150 mg capsule. The amount of active ingredient is denoted by the strength of the capsule (i.e. 150 mg capsule contains 150 mg of active ingredient). We do use some filler to aid in the compounding process and drug stability. The 150 mg capsules are now available through VetRxDirect in a size #1 capsule (for reference, the 125 mg capsule comes in a #3 size capsule, which is smaller than #1 size). Please call VetRxDirect directly with any additional questions.

What is the difference between tylosin phosphate and tylosin tartrate? Can they be used interchangeably? My dog is supposed to have 370mg tylosin tartrate twice daily.?
-
Phosphate and tartrate are two different salt forms of the medication tylosin. They both contain the same active ingredient tylosin. The product that we use to compound our tylosin products is specifically tylosin tartrate, so no adjustment would be needed for our available products. We do not carry tylosin phosphate so if you are looking to use this salt form dose adjustments may need to be made.

My vet said to give my dog 1/4 of a teaspoon. Which size capsule do I order? I know the teaspoon to mg conversion is different depending on the weight of the substance.?
-
We recommend asking your veterinarian. To determine what strength capsule you should order, you will need to know what dosage your veterinarian has prescribed, specifically how many milligrams in each dose.

-
Do I order capsules by the weight of my dog? My Great Dane is 177 pounds.?
-
Because the Tylosin compounded capsules are a prescription medication, your veterinarian should determine the correct strength and dosing directions for your dog.
