The best miracle for our kitty
Kiki my 14 yo kitty was diagnosed with CKF in August after having normal bloodwork in May during her annual senior panel physical. Her decline was swift and devastating. Her normal 14 lb ginger body shrunk to 11 lbs and I could count her vertebrae. Our family was inconsolable and we began to say our goodbyes & try to decide what to do and when for her best comfort. Her normal appetite was completely gone and sometimes just smelling food would make her gag. No eating. I was syringe feeding her baby food just to get calories into her wasting body. We started this miracle ointment on her ear and overnight she was hungry again. This drug has extended her life and we are so grateful. She looks great and somewhat filled in again and seems happy & comfortable.

Something is wrong …
I have purchased this product from you for the past 4+ years. There is something wrong in the manufacturing of the medicine in tube. I opened a brand new tube and had to squeeze half the tube before any medication came out. I have another brand new tube and hesitate to open that one.
Please refund me or send replacement. This is unacceptable you need to follow up with manufacture.

From Nova ScotiaComments about Mirataz (mirtazapine) Transdermal OintmentPrescribed by my vet for inappetance. This medication is 100% ineffective. Very disappointed as it is very expensive and I cannot give my cat tablets. I tried it over several days and it did nothing. I would not recommend at all. Don't waste your money. -

Sometimes it works
From UndisclosedComments about Mirataz (mirtazapine) Transdermal Ointment 20mg/1g, 5g TubeVet prescribed this for my 12-YO male cat who has IBD and intestinal lymphoma and is being treated with chlorambucil. I can't really say if this is helping his appetite or not, because some days he just doesn't want to eat, probably because of the chemo. My vet had prescribed it for my 12-YO female about a year ago when she decided she didn't want to eat for a couple of days (nothing came up in any tests) and it worked like a charm.-
Sometimes I just like to lay on the pool float next to the pool!

This Medication works 100%
From Matthews/Charlotte,N.C.Comments about Mirataz (mirtazapine) Transdermal Ointment 20mg/1g, 5g TubeI administer based on Cat & a all things considered. I am not advising or giving directions other than your Veterinarian or directions advise. I rotate my dose as instructed. But I give my cat 1-3 days of dose if appetite has decreased. I stop until I decide when needed again. Dose is given in AM. I rub the dose into the entire inner ear very well with protective gloves. Any I think is left over I rub into opposite ear. I offer my cat multiple types of food about 1 hr after dose is given. If my cat consumes only a small amt, then offer another type of his favorite food & continue thru.out day/evening. This works 100%-

Q & A

Does the transdermal Mirataz doseage differ in cats with kidney disease??
-
According to Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook, animals with kidney impairment or kidney failure may require lower doses of mirtazapine and should be closely monitored while receiving mirtazapine. Your veterinarian is the best source of information for your cat. Please consult with your veterinarian with any further questions or concerns regarding the dosage of this medication.

Can it be put on any area on the cat with little to no hair?? Or can it only go in the side of the ear, and if so why???
-
The manufacturer of Mirataz conducted an effectiveness study in cats where each 1.5 inch ribbon of ointment was applied topically to the inner pinna of the cat’s ear. There were no other application sites tried or used in the effectiveness trial. Topical application to the inner ear as described in the prescribing information for Mirataz will be the recommended way to achieve the positive results of the study in your cat. Your veterinarian may choose to prescribe and utilize Mirataz in a manner that is inconsistent with manufacturer directions if they feel it is a better option for your cat. Speak to your veterinarian to determine if they would recommend a different application site for Mirataz Transdermal Ointment.

My unscientific answer after using this quite a bit: it's because apparently tastes terrible and I think that's the least likely spot for them to lick off for a while.

-
Per the manufacturer, the only active ingredient in Mirataz is mirtazapine, which is not a steroid. None of these ingredients are steroids. Under the direction and guidance of a veterinarian, Mirataz may be used safely in cats with diabetes.

Too expensive to throw a almost unused tube away 30 days from opening. Can I continue to use it after 30 days??
-
According to the manufacturer, the multi-use tube must be discarded within 30 days of the first use. This is because there is no data on the stability of the drug following 30 days once the tube is opened. The expiry date is printed on the flap of carton and on the crimped portion of the tube. Shelf life (time from manufacture date to expiry date) is 30 months for an unopened tube. Please consult your veterinarian for medication suggestions if you have concerns about the cost of this treatment for your cat.

My veterinarian ordered this for my cat. She throws up as soon as she gets a whiff of cyproheptidine. How is the Mirataz applied? I know it is the ear... is it just rubbed on the inside of the ear? And how long before it starts to work??
-
Is this product being tested for use in dogs??
-
What are the contraindications for this medication? Are specific feline breeds more sensitized to this type of appetite stimulant ???
-
Approximately how many doses can I get from the 5g tube for a 7 1/2 lb cat? Currently giving mirtazapine orally 1/4 of a 15 mg tab QD. Researching CKD and found you product. I showed it my vet and she ordered it. Expecting it soon! Thanks?
-
According to the manufacturer, Mirataz is normally dosed as a 1.5 inch ribbon of ointment per day that corresponds with 2 mg of mirtazapine per dose. The concentration of this product is 2% of mirtazapine by weight, or 20 mg in 1 gram of product. There is enough medication in one tube for a 30 day supply with normal dosing. After 30 days from the first use, the manufacturer recommends discarding the product. Consult with your veterinarian to determine what the right dose for your cat is.
