***An alternative generic fluticasone HFA for cats and dogs is now available.
What is Flovent HFA for Cats and Dogs?
- Flovent is an inhaled, aerosol medication prescribed to treat asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, and other breathing conditions in dogs and cats.
- Flovent contains Fluticasone, a glucocorticoid-type steroid that reduces inflammation of the airways to improve breathing.
Why is Flovent used for cats and dogs?
- Flovent may be prescribed for cats and dogs with asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, or other breathing conditions.
- Flovent is an inhaled steroid that decreases swelling and inflammation of the airways and can help your dog or cat breathe easier.
What else should I know about Flovent?
- A built-in dose counter on the canister makes it easy to track the number of doses left.
- Be sure to check the dose meter regularly to ensure your pet is receiving a full dose of Flovent.
- Using special feline and canine aerosol masks (sold separately) helps ensure that your pet receives the full dose of Flovent. Be sure that the facemask you use to administer Flovent fits your pet properly – it should fit snuggly around the muzzle and corners of the mouth.
- Ground shipping is required due to Department of Transportation regulations. There is no expedited shipping.
- Flovent is a human-labeled medication that may be prescribed for extra-label use by a veterinarian to treat certain medical conditions in dogs and cats. As a pet pharmacy, VetRxDirect only dispenses this medication with a veterinarian’s prescription for use in animals.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Flovent?
- When prescribed for dogs and cats, it may take 7-10 days for Flovent to show its full effect.
- Flovent is not an effective treatment for acute bronchospasm, active wheezing, or shortness of breath in dogs or cats.
- Inhaled steroids usually cause fewer side effects in dogs and cats than when these drugs are injected (given by shot) or given orally (by mouth).
- Flovent side effects in dogs and cats are uncommon and may include a sore throat. If this sign is severe, worsens, or continues to be a problem, contact your veterinarian.
- Although unlikely, long-term, high doses of this drug could cause “Cushingoid” effects. If you see greater thirst and need to urinate, increased appetite, weight gain, pot belly, skin or coat changes, hair loss, or weakness, contact your veterinarian.
How do you use Flovent?
- Shake well before use.
- When using an aerosol medication, a special mask is usually used to fit over the face of the dog or cat to allow more medication to reach the lungs.
- Most effective when used with a spacer or chamber like the AeroKat or AeroDawg Aerosol Chambers. The chamber mixes the drug with air so that your dog or cat will breathe in the medication instead of swallowing it.
What is in Flovent?
The active ingredient in Flovent is Fluticasone, an inhaled glucocorticoid steroid.
How much of the fluticasone steroid is actually per actuation of the inhaler?

Breathing easier physically and mentally with Flovent
From UndisclosedComments about Flovent HFA 220 mcg, 120 Metered ActuationsMy cat, Killian, has asthma. Hearing his coughing attacks broke my heart. My vet recommended Flovent medication, administered via an inhaler. Conditioning Killian to the inhaler took time, patience, and a lot of treats. The improvement I've seen since starting his medication is priceless. His coughing fits are few and far between and don't have the intensity they once did.-
Killian is thrilled to be spending less time coughing and more time cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies in the playoffs!

Q & A

My dog has chronic nasal inflammation and arterial pulmonary hypertension. She takes 15mg of sildenafil 3 times a day and 1.5 mg of hydrocodone cough medicine up to 3 times a day as needed. Her cardiologist has suggested we try flovent 110mcg to see if that helps her. When she is experiencing a bad case of nasal inflammation and seems to be dealing with a horrible episode of post nasal drip and productive sneezing she gets .4ml of a generic form of meloxicam. Can the meloxicam be used with the flovent? Also, is there a generic version of the Flovent. Thanks. Kate?
-
Flovent HFA is an inhaler used for lung diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. There currently is no generic form available. Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to control pain and inflammation and can be used with Flovent. Flovent is not indicated for the treatment of nasal congestion. Please consult your veterinarian to determine the indication of Flovent for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My cat is currently using Flovent 110 mcg. I see you have 44 mcg - how does the Vet determine which dosage is right for my cat. She weighs 8.2 pounds.?
-
Flovent is a steroid inhaler used to treat inflammation in the lungs. Dose of flovent is determined based on the symptoms that the patient is experiencing and the severity of the patient's disease. It is important to continue using this medication, even when your pet seems to be breathing better. This medication works to maintain control over the disease over time, not just when your pet is experiencing symptoms. Patients with more severe disease may require higher doses to control their symptoms. Avoid changing the dose or skip doses without consulting your veterinarian. Thank you, VetRxDirect

If my cat seems to have an upper respiratory infection or cold, could Flovent exacerbate that problem.? My cat has end stage asthma, with only 50% of right lung functioning and his left lung is no longer viable. He's been on 110 mcq 2 puffs twice daily and gets steroid injection daily. His cough sometimes sounds very productive and is more frequent. He used to use his aerokat without any resistance but now fights it and I am lucky to get one dose administered. I notice lately that if he misses a dose, he seems to breath better. Should Flovent be held it decreased if my cat has a cold??

Flovent is a steroid inhaler used to treat the inflammation associated with conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and sinusitis. This is a medication that can take up to 10 days to see the full effect. Missing doses of Flovent can affect the medication's ability to treat the inflammation in your cat's lungs. If left untreated, the inflammation can cause damage in the lungs. A Veterinarian may modify the dose according to the condition of an animal and the effects that the animal may be experiencing. If you are concerned that your cat is experiencing side effects related to Flovent or that your cat has an infection, please consult your veterinarian. Thank you, VetRxDirect

This maintenance medication, Flovent, does require regular use for it to be effective. Please inform your veterinarian if you will be stopping therapy for a short period of time. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I noticed it says orders over $39 are free shipping. The flovent price is $150 and says it doesn't qualify for free shipping, is this a glitch or does it fix itself at checkout??
-
Because Flovent is an aerosol product, ground shipping is required. Therefore this product is not included under our free shipping offer. Only a few products are not included under our free shipping offer. We make sure to notify customers of these restrictions on the respective product pages. Thank you.

can you use the aerokat for a dog or are they totally different??
-
The AeroKat and AeroDawg Small are similar products and can be used interchangeably, but a new device should be used for each pet. The AeroDawg comes with larger masks and is therefore not a substitute for the AeroKat.
