***An alternative generic fluticasone HFA for cats and dogs is now available.
What is Flovent HFA for Cats and Dogs?
- Flovent is an inhaled, aerosol medication prescribed to treat asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, and other breathing conditions in dogs and cats.
- Flovent contains Fluticasone, a glucocorticoid-type steroid that reduces inflammation of the airways to improve breathing.
Why is Flovent used for cats and dogs?
- Flovent may be prescribed for cats and dogs with asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, or other breathing conditions.
- Flovent is an inhaled steroid that decreases swelling and inflammation of the airways and can help your dog or cat breathe easier.
What else should I know about Flovent?
- A built-in dose counter on the canister makes it easy to track the number of doses left.
- Be sure to check the dose meter regularly to ensure your pet is receiving a full dose of Flovent.
- Using special feline and canine aerosol masks (sold separately) helps ensure that your pet receives the full dose of Flovent. Be sure that the facemask you use to administer Flovent fits your pet properly – it should fit snuggly around the muzzle and corners of the mouth.
- Ground shipping is required due to Department of Transportation regulations. There is no expedited shipping.
- Flovent is a human-labeled medication that may be prescribed for extra-label use by a veterinarian to treat certain medical conditions in dogs and cats. As a pet pharmacy, VetRxDirect only dispenses this medication with a veterinarian’s prescription for use in animals.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Flovent?
- When prescribed for dogs and cats, it may take 7-10 days for Flovent to show its full effect.
- Flovent is not an effective treatment for acute bronchospasm, active wheezing, or shortness of breath in dogs or cats.
- Inhaled steroids usually cause fewer side effects in dogs and cats than when these drugs are injected (given by shot) or given orally (by mouth).
- Flovent side effects in dogs and cats are uncommon and may include a sore throat. If this sign is severe, worsens, or continues to be a problem, contact your veterinarian.
- Although unlikely, long-term, high doses of this drug could cause “Cushingoid” effects. If you see greater thirst and need to urinate, increased appetite, weight gain, pot belly, skin or coat changes, hair loss, or weakness, contact your veterinarian.
How do you use Flovent?
- Shake well before use.
- When using an aerosol medication, a special mask is usually used to fit over the face of the dog or cat to allow more medication to reach the lungs.
- Most effective when used with a spacer or chamber like the AeroKat or AeroDawg Aerosol Chambers. The chamber mixes the drug with air so that your dog or cat will breathe in the medication instead of swallowing it.

This medication gave my cat her life back
From UndisclosedComments about Flovent HFA 44 mcg, 120 Metered ActuationsI chose Flovent based on the recommendations posted on chat rooms for parents of pets with asthma. Flovent has changed Julia's life; it has given her life back to her. In only one month of use, she has had only one minor asthma attack, versus 4-5 asthma attacks per day. She is herself again and I can sleep at night and leave her during the day knowing she will be okay. -
This has helped my cat

A medicine that's easy!
From UndisclosedComments about Flovent HFA 110 mcg, 120 Metered ActuationsThis medication is a lifesaver for a cat with asthma. Very well tolerated and very easily dispensed with the Aerokat aerosol chamber. Trubulz jumps right up on the counter when it is time to have his medication. He doesn't hesitate or fight it at all. The whole process is very easy. A little treat after always makes it even better, of course.-

Q & A
-
My cat has been prescribed FloVent because he has been wheezing daily for a few months. He has had every test possible but no relief. We have been using the inhaler for only i week. However, your website says: "Flovent is not an effective treatment for acute bronchospasm, active wheezing, or shortness of breath in dogs or cats." Please advise.?
-
Flovent is a steroidal inhaler that is typically used at the same time or times every day. This is commonly referred to as a “maintenance” inhaler because it helps prevent acute bronchospasms and wheezing from occurring by reducing airway inflammation. It may take around 7-10 days for this medication to reach full effect. If no improvements are seen at this time, please ensure it is being administered properly and speak to your veterinarian about possible dose adjustments. This is different from a “rescue” inhaler that is used as needed to treat acute symptoms. The website is stating that Flovent does not have enough data to support it being used as a rescue inhaler at this time. Please reach out to your veterinarian for advice specific to your cat.

The instructions for this product include "rinse mouth well after each use." How can this be done without my cat swallowing the water??
-
Flovent HFA is a human-labeled prescription medication that may be prescribed for extra-label use by a veterinarian to treat chronic asthma or bronchitis. The human-labeled instructions say to rinse your mouth after each use to prevent thrush, an oral fungal infection; however, thrush does not usually occur in cats. You may consider speaking with your veterinarian to determine the best way to administer this product to your cat.

My cat doesn't have Insurrance , I can't get Insurrance due to her condition of asthma , Flovent is too expensive?
-
My cat is currently taking Flovent 220mcg once a day, to treat what is suspected to be feline asthma. I've noticed that he has started sneezing in high succession during the first week of his medication. At first it was a sneeze here and there, but now it's 5 or 6 sneezes in a row every day. Is this a symptom that is normal, or should I be worried about this development??
-
According to Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook, inhaled steroids such as Flovent usually cause fewer side effects than when given orally by mouth. Information from human data says that irritation to the back of the throat and upper respiratory tract infection are possible. If you have any concerns regarding your cat and this medication, it is recommended that you consult directly with your veterinarian.

My cat has asthma and also does this type of sneezing often and he is not on any meds. So it very well may just be a symptom

My cat is taking prednisolone for asthma and I am interested in switching to Flovent. What is the equivalent dosage of prednisolone to Flovent 44 mcg??
-
Most commonly when starting Flovent, oral glucocorticoid therapy (like prednisolone) would be continued for about 10-14 days with tapering overlap. Please consult your veterinarian about using Flovent in your cat and what dosage you should use.

We have been using the product (Flovent) twice per day on our 19 lbs. geriatric terrier mix. Since we began, about a week ago, he seems to have developed a problem swallowing. Is a sore throat / problematic swallowing a known side effect of the use of Flovent? If so, what remedies are available to us, since this seems to be impairing his ability to eat? Additionally, so we can be prepared for any other issues that may arise, what are the most common side effects of administering Flovent to a dog? Thanks for your help, JD?
-
According to the manufacturer, the adverse effects of Flovent include upper respiratory tract infections or inflammation, throat irritation, sinusitis, dysphonia, candidiasis, cough, bronchitis, or headache. I would recommend speaking with your veterinarian regarding solutions for the sore throat in your dog. Please consult your veterinarian regarding any further questions or concerns regarding this medication in your dog.

Hi i got my prescription filled by you guys from my vet, he prescribed 110mcg twice a day for my 2 year old cat. My question is, how long or how many breaths do I wait for before I remove? I place the mask on, puff and then wait how long? Thanks?
-
According to the manufacturer’s instructions for AeroKat, the mask should be left on the cat’s face for 5-6 breaths. Please speak with your veterinarian as individual directions for your cat may vary.
Verified Answer -
I've been using this for my cat for a couple of years now. I always wait for about 8 to 10 breaths. Sometimes my kitty doesn't seem to take as deep a breath as others so I want to ensure that she gets a full dose. This seems to work very well for her.
