***An alternative generic fluticasone HFA for cats and dogs is now available.
What is Flovent HFA for Cats and Dogs?
- Flovent is an inhaled, aerosol medication prescribed to treat asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, and other breathing conditions in dogs and cats.
- Flovent contains Fluticasone, a glucocorticoid-type steroid that reduces inflammation of the airways to improve breathing.
Why is Flovent used for cats and dogs?
- Flovent may be prescribed for cats and dogs with asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, or other breathing conditions.
- Flovent is an inhaled steroid that decreases swelling and inflammation of the airways and can help your dog or cat breathe easier.
What else should I know about Flovent?
- A built-in dose counter on the canister makes it easy to track the number of doses left.
- Be sure to check the dose meter regularly to ensure your pet is receiving a full dose of Flovent.
- Using special feline and canine aerosol masks (sold separately) helps ensure that your pet receives the full dose of Flovent. Be sure that the facemask you use to administer Flovent fits your pet properly – it should fit snuggly around the muzzle and corners of the mouth.
- Ground shipping is required due to Department of Transportation regulations. There is no expedited shipping.
- Flovent is a human-labeled medication that may be prescribed for extra-label use by a veterinarian to treat certain medical conditions in dogs and cats. As a pet pharmacy, VetRxDirect only dispenses this medication with a veterinarian’s prescription for use in animals.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Flovent?
- When prescribed for dogs and cats, it may take 7-10 days for Flovent to show its full effect.
- Flovent is not an effective treatment for acute bronchospasm, active wheezing, or shortness of breath in dogs or cats.
- Inhaled steroids usually cause fewer side effects in dogs and cats than when these drugs are injected (given by shot) or given orally (by mouth).
- Flovent side effects in dogs and cats are uncommon and may include a sore throat. If this sign is severe, worsens, or continues to be a problem, contact your veterinarian.
- Although unlikely, long-term, high doses of this drug could cause “Cushingoid” effects. If you see greater thirst and need to urinate, increased appetite, weight gain, pot belly, skin or coat changes, hair loss, or weakness, contact your veterinarian.
How do you use Flovent?
- Shake well before use.
- When using an aerosol medication, a special mask is usually used to fit over the face of the dog or cat to allow more medication to reach the lungs.
- Most effective when used with a spacer or chamber like the AeroKat or AeroDawg Aerosol Chambers. The chamber mixes the drug with air so that your dog or cat will breathe in the medication instead of swallowing it.
What is in Flovent?

Breathing easier physically and mentally with Flovent
From UndisclosedComments about Flovent HFA 220 mcg, 120 Metered ActuationsMy cat, Killian, has asthma. Hearing his coughing attacks broke my heart. My vet recommended Flovent medication, administered via an inhaler. Conditioning Killian to the inhaler took time, patience, and a lot of treats. The improvement I've seen since starting his medication is priceless. His coughing fits are few and far between and don't have the intensity they once did.-
Killian is thrilled to be spending less time coughing and more time cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies in the playoffs!

what is the difference between mine and 1 for my cat ?i use ventolin hfa albuterol sulfate 90mcg ??
-
Flovent HFA contains fluticasone propionate, an inhaled topical corticosteroid, which is used in both humans and cats for inflammatory airway diseases like asthma or bronchitis. As a topical corticosteroid, fluticasone has potent anti-inflammatory effects in the airways through decreasing the production of any inflammatory molecules that may be present. Through this effect, the medication targets the underlying cause of most airway diseases, inflammation. The albuterol sulfate in Ventolin HFA is an inhaled topical bronchodilator. This medication works by temporarily relaxing smooth muscles in the airway that may be constricted due to irritation from inflammation or from inhalation of irritants. For this reason, Ventolin is commonly used as a “rescue” inhaler to open the airways, or used on an as needed basis, whereas Flovent is commonly used on a scheduled or daily basis. However, your pet’s veterinarian will decide which inhaler is most appropriate for your pet and how often that inhaler should be used. Thank you, VetRxDirect

what if my cat holds his breath while I try to give him flovent??
-
If there is trouble getting the medication delivered you can talk to your veterinarian about using a chamber such as the AeroKat Feline Aerosol Chamber to administer Flovent. This chamber allows the dose to be taken in over a few breaths after actuation of the inhaler. There is an Indicator that moves with respiration allowing you to see if the cat is breathing in the medication, ensuring that you have the chamber properly sealed against the face, and allows you to count breaths. Is it possible to give the Flovent to my dog without using the areodawg chamber....she really really dosent like the mask over her muzzle. ?.any other suggestions. ?
-
It may be difficult to give your pet the entire dose from an aerosol inhaler without using a chamber. It will be important for your pet to have her mouth open and breathing in at the same time as the inhaler is actuated. If this is not possible, you should contact your dog's veterinarian for an alternative dosage form to the inhaler. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I AM CURRENTLY USING A AERODAWG ON OUR DOG AND ADMINISTERING THE 44 MML FLOVENT. HOW LONG DO YOU RECOMMEND LEAVING THE AERODAWG ON AS I CANT TELL WEATHER THERE IS ANY MEDICAMENT IN THE INHALER?????
-
Doug, Leaving the mask on for 8 to 10 seconds, or 7 to 10 breaths is recommended in order to optimize the amount of medication that get inhaled. For further questions on use please contact your veterinarian. Thank you, VetRxDirect

since my vet doesn't sell inhalers or use them in his practice, your pharmacists spoke with him in recommending an inhaler. wanting to use "chlorpheniramine maleate 4mg., would this cause any side effects or issues using with inhaler's flovent/albuterol??
-
debbie123, Chlorpheniramine maleate can have the following side effects: Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, upset stomach, constipation, decreased coordination, and blurred vision may occur with low incidence. The use of chlorpheniramine maleate 4 mg can be used safely with flovent or albuterol inhalers if used as recommended your veterinarian. Please contact your veterinarian about any unusual or noticeable side effects when using this medication. Thank you, VetRxDirect

currently using flovent and also albuterol for my cat's asthma. now that spring is here can I also use an antihistamine tablet for my cat along with using these inhalers??
-
Debbie, Yes, typically Flovent, albuterol, and an antihistamine can all be used together without any additional risk of side-effects. However, this combination of medications depends on which type of antihistamine is used and the strength/dosage of each medication. For optimal use please contact your cat's veterinarian for further assistance regarding use and dosage. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Flovent vs. advair....thank you for the response regarding these two meds. since the advair also reduces inflamation but also opens up the airway which flovent does not, why is it that flovent is recommended more than advair for my pets asthma.?
-
Debbie, The choice of Flovent over Advair may be due to several reasons: veterinarian’s medication preference, severity of the pet’s asthma, and the cost of the medication. Typically, Flovent is used before Advair because many pets initially take albuterol (branded ProAir, Ventolin) as a rescue inhaler and Flovent is added to the drug regimen. If the asthma is not controlled on Flovent a veterinarian may recommend replacing Flovent therapy with Advair. Please contact your veterinarian to determine the appropriate therapy for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

-
what is the difference between flovent and advair? I know one has an extra ingredient in it, but what exactly does flovent do or provide that advair doesn't, or vice versa??
-
Debbie, Flovent contains fluticasone whereas Advair contains fluticasone and salmeterol. Both inhalers are used for maintenance therapy to improve breathing symptoms your pet may be experiencing. Flovent reduces inflammation in the lungs and Advair reduces inflammation and opens up the airways in the lungs. Both medications are typically dosed twice daily and spacers such as the Aerokat and Aerodawg can assist in administration of these aerosolized medications. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Usually this medication requires a prescription but it's not evident on your site. Do you require a prescription from a veterinarian??
-
Floyd, Flovent does require a prescription and our pharmacy only accepts prescriptions written by veterinarians. On our website, prescription medications are marked by an orange Rx symbol to the right of the product's name on that product's page. Thank you, VetRxDirect
