***An alternative generic fluticasone HFA for cats and dogs is now available.
What is Flovent HFA for Cats and Dogs?
- Flovent is an inhaled, aerosol medication prescribed to treat asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, and other breathing conditions in dogs and cats.
- Flovent contains Fluticasone, a glucocorticoid-type steroid that reduces inflammation of the airways to improve breathing.
Why is Flovent used for cats and dogs?
- Flovent may be prescribed for cats and dogs with asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, or other breathing conditions.
- Flovent is an inhaled steroid that decreases swelling and inflammation of the airways and can help your dog or cat breathe easier.
What else should I know about Flovent?
- A built-in dose counter on the canister makes it easy to track the number of doses left.
- Be sure to check the dose meter regularly to ensure your pet is receiving a full dose of Flovent.
- Using special feline and canine aerosol masks (sold separately) helps ensure that your pet receives the full dose of Flovent. Be sure that the facemask you use to administer Flovent fits your pet properly – it should fit snuggly around the muzzle and corners of the mouth.
- Ground shipping is required due to Department of Transportation regulations. There is no expedited shipping.
- Flovent is a human-labeled medication that may be prescribed for extra-label use by a veterinarian to treat certain medical conditions in dogs and cats. As a pet pharmacy, VetRxDirect only dispenses this medication with a veterinarian’s prescription for use in animals.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Flovent?
- When prescribed for dogs and cats, it may take 7-10 days for Flovent to show its full effect.
- Flovent is not an effective treatment for acute bronchospasm, active wheezing, or shortness of breath in dogs or cats.
- Inhaled steroids usually cause fewer side effects in dogs and cats than when these drugs are injected (given by shot) or given orally (by mouth).
- Flovent side effects in dogs and cats are uncommon and may include a sore throat. If this sign is severe, worsens, or continues to be a problem, contact your veterinarian.
- Although unlikely, long-term, high doses of this drug could cause “Cushingoid” effects. If you see greater thirst and need to urinate, increased appetite, weight gain, pot belly, skin or coat changes, hair loss, or weakness, contact your veterinarian.
How do you use Flovent?
- Shake well before use.
- When using an aerosol medication, a special mask is usually used to fit over the face of the dog or cat to allow more medication to reach the lungs.
- Most effective when used with a spacer or chamber like the AeroKat or AeroDawg Aerosol Chambers. The chamber mixes the drug with air so that your dog or cat will breathe in the medication instead of swallowing it.

Breathing easier physically and mentally with Flovent
From UndisclosedComments about Flovent HFA 220 mcg, 120 Metered ActuationsMy cat, Killian, has asthma. Hearing his coughing attacks broke my heart. My vet recommended Flovent medication, administered via an inhaler. Conditioning Killian to the inhaler took time, patience, and a lot of treats. The improvement I've seen since starting his medication is priceless. His coughing fits are few and far between and don't have the intensity they once did.-
Killian is thrilled to be spending less time coughing and more time cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies in the playoffs!

Q & A

Can I take a photo of the RX my vet gave me for this and send that with my order? Since it is winter and will take a while for flovent to get to me (Iive in south east arkansas) I am worried it will be too cold for too long in unheated trucks. How much of a problem is that since temperatures are well below the storage temps or do you pack it in an insulated container to help keep the cold out??
-
You can mail an original Rx or your pet's veterinarian can fax a prescription to us. Most prescription medications can be kept outside of their recommended storage range for a short period of time with no damage to the product.

My vet just recommended flovent--220 ug/puff for my dog with respiratory allergies. That's greek to me. Is that what this product is, and do I control the volume (I assume 220 ug/puff refers to volume delivered..) ? I will be using it with an AeroDawg inhalation chamber--will this work with that??
-
Flovent HFA inhaler is a medication that can help your dog's respiratory symptoms. These symptoms may include wheezing, coughing, and restricted breathing from conditions like asthma, bronchitis, and allergies. For each puff delivered by the Flovent HFA inhaler a total of 220 mcg of drug is administered. When used with an inhalation chamber like AeroDawg it is the most effective. Please contact your dog's veterinarian if you have any further questions regarding the administration of Flovent to your dog.

My concern is ground transport - the product would be exposed to temperatures outside what is recommended by the manufacturer. I assume that the Flovent HFA 110mcg is not transported in packaging to keep the temperature within the recommended range is this correct??
-
The manufacturer recommends storing this product at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C), but does permit temperature excursions from 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C) to allow for transport and other incidents. Because Flovent is an aerosol and the contents are under pressure, it cannot be shipped with express methods on an airplane due to changes in altitude pressure, and must be shipped by ground methods.

Our dog has been on Flovent 220 2 puffs every 12 hours for 14 days to decrease inflammation in his lungs. We have seen no reduction in his breathing rate. If he has a chronic condition, how long before improvement will be noted? He appears to be panting more and much more hungry. Are these side effects? If we stop as this was not successful, do we need to taper off??
-
Benefits from steroid medications like Flovent are typically seen in 1 to 2 weeks but may take up to a month before the full effect from the medication is observed. Panting and increased appetite could be side effects of this medication though. We recommend contacting your veterinarian if you do not see improvement in your dog's symptoms after a month of use or if you notice any additional symptoms after starting the medication therapy.

Which inhaler is suggested for a 10 lb cat 44mcg, 110mcg or 220 mcg? Where can I find this information??
-
Flovent contains the active ingredient fluticasone, which is an inhaled glucocorticoid that is commonly used in the treatment of feline asthma. Generally, it is recommended to begin with the 110 mcg dose if your cat is experiencing exacerbations more than once per week. The dose may then be increased or reduced depending upon symptom relief and tolerability. If your cat is experiencing milder symptoms less than once a week, a lower dose of 44mcg may be used initially. Please contact your pet's veterinarian to determine which dose would best suit your pet's needs. Thank you, VetRxDirect
