So thankful for this medicine!
My 11 year old beagle, Cali, started having seizures in late September of 2013! The. After the first one they started coming every two weeks. Each seizure lasted about 1 minute, but anyone who has seen their dog go through one .. it's about 1 minute too long! After her seizures started occurring she became lethargic and I was afraid this was it! After her 3rd seizures and multiple tests, Cali's vet finally prescribed her zonisamide. She takes 75mg twice a day! I cannot tell you how thankful I am for this medicine. It has brought me peace of mind now that she is no longer having seizures and it has brought my fun loving little girl back to life! Verrxdirect has also been a blessing in allowing me to purchase her medicines for such a reasonable price! Thank you!!!! And to mom and dads out there who are first experiencing the horror of watching their baby go through seizures I can tell you - it does it easier! I had many sleepless nights watching her worried with the dread of anticipation she was going to have one and after the first one and doing research I learned how to better handle them no help her through! And when the medicine was prescribed a weight was lifted off both mine and Cali's shoulders!

Out of Stock/Unavailable
I have been purchasing my dog's Zonisamide (epilepsy meds) from RxDirect for quite some time but this last time they were out of stock/unavailable. When I called to ask when they would have some available, they were apologetic but unable to give me any specific date for their re-stock. This medicine can't be interrupted and I will have to go elsewhere to get the medicine. This was unexpected and I am disappointed at the inconvenience of having to call my Vet to call the local pharmacy, and know I will pay more for it.

Seizure medication
From UndisclosedComments about Zonisamide (Generic)I have used this medication for my schnauzer for seizures for a couple of years. He has had no side affects as some of the other medications have caused and his seizures have dropped drastically... This med is more pricier than others, but I feel well worth it... -
Good product, great price
From Texas, USAComments about Zonisamide (Generic)No fuss, no bother. Received product without any problems -
great service, changes in pill size
From Chicago, IL, USAComments about Zonisamide (Generic)I moved over to VetRx after a bad experience with another online company and because of their customer service and quick responses via email, I will never change to another company. In regards to Zonisamide.. the pill has not caused any issues for my boston terrier, but recently the pill has changed to a much larger size which has made it difficult for my dog to swallow. I know that VetRx was recently out of stock with Zonisamide so I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the size changing. Hoping they go back to the smaller version. -
Great prices!

Hi there- with my 42# dog, is 100mg - 3 times a day an appropriate dosage? He started having seizures (again) every 30 days for 3 mos, after having been on 100mg 2 times a day- which was keeping them to 1 x year. Our vet just increased the dosage.?
-
Zonisamide is an anticonvulsant drug used to treat seizure disorders in dogs. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the dosage of this medication, your veterinarian is the best source of information about its use for your dog’s needs.

My dog takes 300 mg zonisamide every 12 hrs as three 100 mg capsules each dose. The instructions say not to break or chew the capsules but every once in a while my dog will get his teeth on one of the capsules and crack it open prior to swallowing it. Is this detrimental??
-
The administration of an intact zonisamide capsule will help ensure your pet receives the entire recommended dose. There would not be an expected problem if a capsule is accidentally cracked open prior to swallowing. Speak to your veterinarian for suggestions if you are concerned that your pet is not receiving the full prescribed dosage.

I just started giving zonisamide 50 mg 2x daily to my 10 year old Westie. The side effects seem extreme to me. He is anxious, pacing, walking into furniture, falling and panting a lot. We have an appointment with a neurologist in two days (he has been on the medication for six days now). I have confirmed that he has been prescribed the recommended dosage for his weight. He had none of these symptoms prior to starting medication. I won't stop the medication without talking to the vet. If the vet does stop the medication will the side effects go away? Also, is it possible that he just may need a lower dose? My vet did say I could try cutting it in half. I'm not sure of the best way to do this with a capsule. Can I add it to his food? Thank you.?
-
Since there has been limited use of this drug in veterinary patients, the adverse effect profile is not fully known. Adverse effects that have been reported in dogs include sedation (usually transient), ataxia, and inappetence. If the veterinarian recommends, Zonisamide capsules may be opened and the powder divided evenly for split dosing. If the powder is added to food, the dosage may be hard to determine if the dog has any food not consumed. Please consult with your veterinarian for further assistance.

How long must a dog take zonisamide (alone) for epilespy? For life? How would you know when you could stop? Thanks?
-
Zonisamide is used to reduce the seizures that come with epilepsy, so a dog would need to take it for as long as seizures are experienced. Please contact your veterinarian regarding the length of use of this medication in your dog.

I read in one of the responses to a question that the zonisamide that you sell comes from India. How can I be assured of the quality of the medication? Are there stringent guidelines for the production of this medication in a foreign country as there would be in the United States? Our dogs are our loved ones and we don't want to scrimp on quality for the sake of price.?
-
All drugs approved in the United States, regardless of where they are made, must be in compliance with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which requires that drugs meet manufacturing standards to assure quality and product label requirements.

How long before Zonisamide is fully effective? What is the dosage for a 80 pound Lab??
-
The dosage and frequency should always be approved by a veterinarian. An average dose for an 80 pound dog would be around 360 mg given every 8 to 12 hours. In humans, zonisamide take about 14 days before it is at maximum level in the human body, however there is limited data in animals and we cannot guarantee that this will work in the same time frame for animals.

My specialty vet prescribed Zonisamide, 25 mg, for my 15 lb dachshund. After one week on this medicine, my dog has lost 90% control of both his back feet!!!!!!!! What has happened???????
-
Zonisamide is an anticonvulsant medication which is effective alone and can be used in conjunction with other anticonvulsants to control the symptoms of refractory epilepsy. The dose of zonisamide is based on your dog's weight and situation as well as if this medication is used alone or not. The dose of 2-10 mg/kg by mouth twice daily has been seen in the clinical practice. The adverse effect profile of zonisamide is not fully known for dogs. Sedation, ataxia (the loss of control of bodily movements), inappetence, hepatopathy, urinary calculi, metabolic and acute tubular acidosis have been reported. Do not stop giving zonisamide suddenly or rebound seizures can occur. Please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible to make appropriate adjustment about your dogs anticonvulsant therapy.
