So thankful for this medicine!
My 11 year old beagle, Cali, started having seizures in late September of 2013! The. After the first one they started coming every two weeks. Each seizure lasted about 1 minute, but anyone who has seen their dog go through one .. it's about 1 minute too long! After her seizures started occurring she became lethargic and I was afraid this was it! After her 3rd seizures and multiple tests, Cali's vet finally prescribed her zonisamide. She takes 75mg twice a day! I cannot tell you how thankful I am for this medicine. It has brought me peace of mind now that she is no longer having seizures and it has brought my fun loving little girl back to life! Verrxdirect has also been a blessing in allowing me to purchase her medicines for such a reasonable price! Thank you!!!! And to mom and dads out there who are first experiencing the horror of watching their baby go through seizures I can tell you - it does it easier! I had many sleepless nights watching her worried with the dread of anticipation she was going to have one and after the first one and doing research I learned how to better handle them no help her through! And when the medicine was prescribed a weight was lifted off both mine and Cali's shoulders!

Out of Stock/Unavailable
I have been purchasing my dog's Zonisamide (epilepsy meds) from RxDirect for quite some time but this last time they were out of stock/unavailable. When I called to ask when they would have some available, they were apologetic but unable to give me any specific date for their re-stock. This medicine can't be interrupted and I will have to go elsewhere to get the medicine. This was unexpected and I am disappointed at the inconvenience of having to call my Vet to call the local pharmacy, and know I will pay more for it.

Keppra, vs lamictal, and Zonegran
From N/AComments about Zonisamide (Generic)I've personally been on all three before, and currently taking Zonegran on top of Lamictal. Keppra can cause mood swings. Zonegran is a seizure medication but also is a nerve pain blocker. Lamictal is a mood stabilizer and seizure medicine. -

What are the possible side effects of missing a dose? My pup is currently taking the 25g dose. I've run out of pills and will not be able to pick up the prescription until tomorrow morning. Last dose was at 8:30am.?
-
Mara, Zonisamide is used as either monotherapy or in addition to another medication for the management of seizure disorders. The usual dosing frequency of this medication is every 12 hours (ie. twice daily). Based on this dosing, your dog will miss their evening dose of this medication. As this medication is used to help control the occurrence of seizures, an increase in seizures could potentially occur. Your dog should resume taking this medication as soon as possible, as abrupt, prolong discontinuation of this medication can lead to the occurrence of “rebound” seizures. Contact your veterinarian if you have any concerns regarding the health of your dog. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My dog tolerate zonegran 100mg tablets (twice/day) very well. it's there any different on drug effect between capsules and tablets? My dog may need to try capsule as no tablets can be ordered from website now. Thank you.?
-
Zonisamide is only available in the United States in an immediate release capsule form. We are unaware of any commercially available tablet form of this product. If you are receiving a compounded tablet from another compounding pharmacy we would not be able to verify that the dose of that medication is equivalent to the capsule form that is currently available. Please consult your veterinarian prior to starting or stopping any new medications for your pet.

What are the side effects of zonisamide for a dog? Minature Schnauzer is taking 75mg 2 times a day. He weighs about 21 lbs.?
-
Graham, Adverse events that have been reported from zonisamide use in veterinary patients include sedation (usually temporary), abnormal muscle movements including coordination issues with walking or standing and inappetence. Maintain a log of seizure frequency to keep track of the drug efficacy while on zonisamide. Document all side effects and changes of behavior in your pet while on zonisamide. Follow up with your veterinarian if the side effects become bothersome to you or your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

You have explained that Zonisamide is a generic. The capsules pictured are a different color from the ones I get at the pharmacy, so I assume they are from a different manufacturer. How stringent are the formulas from maker to maker to assure consistency??
-
Zonisamide is a human-labelled medication prescribed for pets. Generics must provide evidence that they have the same active drug (i.e. zonisamide) and drug strength as well as the same effect by the drug when taken. Zonisamide medications from different manufacturers should have similar effect(s) on your pet and would be considered equivalents to one another. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Is this Zonisamide the original product, or a generic? Thanks.?
-
Zonisamide is the drug name or generic name for the medication. Zonegran is the original brand name of the medication, but rarely would that be filled as the generic has be available for several years. We only carry generic zonisamide. Thank you, VetRxDirect
