So thankful for this medicine!
My 11 year old beagle, Cali, started having seizures in late September of 2013! The. After the first one they started coming every two weeks. Each seizure lasted about 1 minute, but anyone who has seen their dog go through one .. it's about 1 minute too long! After her seizures started occurring she became lethargic and I was afraid this was it! After her 3rd seizures and multiple tests, Cali's vet finally prescribed her zonisamide. She takes 75mg twice a day! I cannot tell you how thankful I am for this medicine. It has brought me peace of mind now that she is no longer having seizures and it has brought my fun loving little girl back to life! Verrxdirect has also been a blessing in allowing me to purchase her medicines for such a reasonable price! Thank you!!!! And to mom and dads out there who are first experiencing the horror of watching their baby go through seizures I can tell you - it does it easier! I had many sleepless nights watching her worried with the dread of anticipation she was going to have one and after the first one and doing research I learned how to better handle them no help her through! And when the medicine was prescribed a weight was lifted off both mine and Cali's shoulders!

Out of Stock/Unavailable
I have been purchasing my dog's Zonisamide (epilepsy meds) from RxDirect for quite some time but this last time they were out of stock/unavailable. When I called to ask when they would have some available, they were apologetic but unable to give me any specific date for their re-stock. This medicine can't be interrupted and I will have to go elsewhere to get the medicine. This was unexpected and I am disappointed at the inconvenience of having to call my Vet to call the local pharmacy, and know I will pay more for it.

Keppra, vs lamictal, and Zonegran
From N/AComments about Zonisamide (Generic)I've personally been on all three before, and currently taking Zonegran on top of Lamictal. Keppra can cause mood swings. Zonegran is a seizure medication but also is a nerve pain blocker. Lamictal is a mood stabilizer and seizure medicine. -

Q & A

can I open up the capsule and mix with water and use syringe to give it to pet..My pet has no teeth and only weighs 4 lbs?
-
The inactive ingredients, as well as the active drug, zonisamide, will not fully dissolve in water. Speak with your veterinarian to determine if opening the capsule and using the syringe method as described is the best option for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Phenobarbital cannot be discontinued abruptly for dogs. How about zonisamide??
-
Winnie, Zonsiamide therapy, just like phenobarbital therapy, should not be abruptly stopped due to the risk of “rebound” seizures occurring. Contact your veterinarian to determine the appropriate method to taper your pet off the medication. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Does this come in 12 mg? My dog is 8 lbs and her Vet prescribes a smaller dosage.?
-
Rochelle, We do not carry a smaller strength of the zonisamide and a smaller strength is not available through our distributors. You may want to contact a local compounding pharmacy to see if the pharmacy would be able to create a smaller dose for you. Thank you, VetRxDirect

He takes 3. 100mg pills twice a day and we gave him an extra dose by accident , what could happen or what should we watch out for .?
-
Eddie, Due to the lack of specific information about your pet (species, weight, health status) it would be best to consult your veterinarian on the best course of action. Possible side effects from this medication include: sedation, labored breathing, and decreased appetite. Thank you, VetRxDirect

What would be the average dose for a 20 pound dog?
-
Patricia, A suggested range for zonisamide dosing is 5-10mg/kg by mouth every 12 hours. However the dose of zonisamide will need to be adjusted if given in combination with phenobarbital, a commonly used anti-seizure drug. Phenobarbital will increase the clearance of zonisamide, decreasing the overall exposure to zonisamide, which may necessitate the need for a higher zonisamide dosage. Factors including whether zonisamide is used a an "add-on" drug for refractory seizure therapy or if used as mono-therapy will affect the dose. Please work with your veterinarian to establish the proper dose for your dog. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Do I need a prescription to order this medicine? I've consulated with the Vet on dosage for our pet but want verify if prescription is need prior to ordering. If so, what are the precedures? v/r Terry?
-
Terry, Zonisamide is a prescription medication. The process for ordering, since it sounds like you've worked with your pet's veterinarian and know what you need, would be to place an order; you'll include the veterinarian's information and your pet's information as a part of the order, and once we receive the order, we'll send a fax over to the veterinarian you list for authorization on the prescription. If the clinic issues you a written prescription for the zonisamide, you would need to mail that prescription to us. Once a prescription is received, we will process and ship the order. Thank you, VetRxDirect
