Proin
When your dog is incontinent it’s uncomfortable for your pet and a messy problem for you. Talk to your veterinarian about Proin, a prescription medication for treating urinary incontinence. Proin reduces leakage by tightening the bladder sphincter muscle.
- Manages urinary incontinence in dogs
- Tightens the bladder sphincter muscle to control urine leakage
- Choose easy dosing liquid or chewable tablets
Age, disease, urinary stones, and even injury can cause a dog to loose complete control over her bladder. When that happens even a housetrained pet may dribble urine or loose large amounts of urine suddenly. If your dog has urinary incontinence, prescription Proin may help. The active ingredient in Proin, phenylpropanolamine, is a type of stimulant that causes the muscles in the bladder to contract therefore reducing urine leakage. Given over time, Proin keeps a constant level of phenylpropanolamine in the blood so your dog will have more bladder control. Note: Proin is classified as a controlled substance in our home state of Iowa, so prescriptions for Proin are only valid for six months. We must obtain a new prescription from your veterinarian every six months. Refill requests that exceed six months from the prescription date are not valid for this medication.
What you should know about Proin:
- Talk to your veterinarian before using this product.
- Follow dosing directions exactly - don’t give your pet more medication than directed and don’t skip doses.
- Read the label carefully for information about storage, possible side effects, and drug interactions.

I have an extremely hard time giving this pill (and any pill) to my dog. She will not chew these + she can regurgitate pills at will. Can I crush these up + mix with a tiny amount of liquid + give via oral syringe without disrupting the medicinal value? ?
-
Proin does have a bitter taste for dogs. It is best to give the chewable tablets with food to mask the taste. If this hasn’t worked for you, when speaking with the manufacturer, it is NOT recommended to crush and give via oral syringe. We would suggest you contact your veterinarian for further options on treatment. Thank you, VetRxDirect

do I need a prescription to purchase Proin??
-
Ronda, Yes, Proin is a prescription medication. It is also considered a controlled substance, so it is not available to ship to every state, depending on the state controlled substance laws. If it is available to ship to your state, then we can accept the prescription from your dog's veterinarian in a couple of different ways. Once you have placed your order, we can send a fax directly to the veterinary clinic you list which the clinic may then fax back, or, the clinic may choose to issue you a written prescription which you can then mail to us. Once we receive the prescription, we will process and ship out your order. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My lab does not like the taste of the chewables and spits them out, even when hidden with his regular kibble. Is there a pill form or another option to try??
-
Unfortunately, the liquid phenylpropanolamine (Proin drops) were discontinued by the manufacturer and we are not currently aware of any other dosage form available for this medication. If you are concerned about your pet obtaining a regular dose of the Proin, or you worry that the medication is not working, you should contact your lab's veterinarian about alternative treatments; if you're unable to administer the Proin regularly or effectively, there may be another treatment that would be easier and more effective for you and your lab. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I do not see what the dosage is for a dog that is 20 lbs. Is this a medication that needs to be taken for the life of the dog to prevent incontinence or will the bladder correct itself and able to stop taking the medication??
-
Sonja, Proin (phenylpropanolamine) is used to treat incontinence in dogs. Incontinence may present in different ways but typically requires medication to be given long-term. One reference recommends a dosing range of phenylpropanolamine immediate release - 9mg to 18mg two to three times daily for a 20lb dog. Your veterinarian will determine a more accurate dosing regimen based on the reason for your dog’s incontinence. Thank you, VetRxDirect

You shouldn't have to "get it into him". The tablets are flavored chewable. My dog begs for them, lol

How does this medication work? I understand what the medication is for, but don't know how it really works. Why can't I just stop this medication? What will happen to my dog??
-
Patricia, Proin works mainly by constricting a type of muscle called smooth muscle in your dog's blood vessels and the muscle of the urethra. The effect seen is increased blood pressure and increased tone of the urethral muscle to help with problems such as congestion or incontinence. If the medication is stopped abruptly, events such as low blood pressure might occur and lead to things like dizziness or recurrence of incontinence symptoms. Contact your veterinarian before discontinuing your dog's medication. Thank you, VetRxDirect
