What is the PredniSONE Suspension for Dogs?
- PrednisoLONE and PredniSONE are two prescription glucocorticoid steroid medications that are commonly confused.
- PredniSONE is converted to the active component PrednisoLONE by the liver.
- PredniSONE is often used to treat inflammation, to suppress the immune system, to replace or supplement adrenal insufficient animals, or to inhibit the growth or spread of tumors.
- Horses, cats, and pets with liver failure will need to be given PrednisoLONE instead of PredniSONE to achieve the desired treatment because they are unable to convert PredniSONE efficiently to PrednisoLONE.
- In order to have the best treatment possible for you cat, PrednisoLONE should be considered. Cats cannot convert PredniSONE completely to PrednisoLONE, so only part of the dose is able to exert its effect.
- The oral suspension is a flavored liquid that may be easier to dose than tablets.
Why do dogs use PredniSONE?
- PredniSONE may be prescribed to treat hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease).
- PredniSONE may also be prescribed to reduce inflammation, suppress the immune system, or as an anticancer agent.
What else should I know about PredniSONE?
- Flavored oral suspension is a liquid that may be easier to dose than tablets.
- The suspension is oil-based and should be stored at room temperature. It does not need to be refrigerated.
What problems could my dog have with PredniSONE?
- When using PredniSONE, veterinarians want to use the least amount of medication needed to effectively treat your pet to reduce the side effects.
- PredniSONE has many side effects. Side effects are more likely with long term use and higher doses.
- The most common side effects of PredniSONE are increased appetite, thirst, and need to urinate.
- Dogs may have serious side effects such as stomach or intestinal ulcers, perforation, or bleeding. If your dog stops eating, or you notice signs such as high fever, black, tarry stools, or bloody vomit, contact your veterinarian immediately.
How do you use PredniSONE?
- PredniSONE should be given with food. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Do not stop giving PredniSONE without talking to your veterinarian as serious side effects may result.
What is in PredniSONE?
- PredniSONE is a glucocorticoid or hormone that breaks down fats, carbohydrates, and proteins so that they can be used to fuel the body in times of stress.
- PredniSONE is converted to the active component PrednisoLONE by the liver.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- This PredniSONE Suspension is a compounded medication. The ingredients will be mixed specially for your dog or cat in our pharmacy.

I need this product for my fur baby
From UndisclosedComments about PredniSONE Suspension (Compounded)Works very well as intended -
I will buy this again when needed.
From undisclosedComments about PredniSONE Suspension (Compounded)I cannot give my 14 year old cat pills. Liquid isn't easy, but way better than fighting with pill shooters! -
Still distasteful to my cat, but easier to get in than pills
From undisclosedComments about PredniSONE Suspension (Compounded)My cat hates his prednisolone, no matter what I try to hide it in. He is a little devil, so trying to get it in his mouth is impossible. He will not lick this up, he can still taste the medicine, but at least with the suspension, I can get it near his mouth and he is forced to lick the rest off. -
I heard it's a good one
From Dover, NJComments about PredniSONE Suspension (Compounded)Hoping it helps on my cat skin. So far i dont see any improvement. -
DO NOT BUY
From VAComments about PredniSONE Suspension (Compounded)My cat has Pemphigus and is prescribed this medicine to treat it. The medicine we received from the vet got him under control so we ordered this for convenience when it ran out. Within days of using this medicine his symptoms came back in full force. Went back to the vet's medicine and got him back under control, but it was obvious this medicine did not work at all. It appears to just be mashed up pills in a saline solution. DO NOT BUY. -
I would use this vendor again!

I need prednisone for my ferret. He takes 0.4 ml per day, of 10mg/ml suspension, chicken flavored. I have two questions: - is your prednisone for cats/dogs fine for me to give my ferret? - how long does this keep in the fridge? Can I purchase the 60ml bottle, which would take us about 150 days to use? - fish flavor is probably fine, but do you have chicken flavor??
-
Yes, the prednisone suspension can be given to your ferret with a proper prescription and approval from your veterinarian. This medication has a beyond use date of 90 days and should be stored at room temperature. VetRxDirect uses a corn oil base to make this prednisone suspension, which means that it does not have to be stored in the refrigerator. At this dose, a 30 mL/75 day supply would make sense for your ferret because this is within the beyond use date. We do not currently offer the prednisone suspension in chicken flavor, but please feel free to contact VetRxDirect directly for more information.

Can the liquid be mixed with wet cat food or does it have to be ejected from syringe into cat's mouth directly??
-
To maximize the effect of this medication, give this directly into your cat's mouth. This will ensure all the medication was consumed.

I was leaving dry food down all day for my two cats. In order for my male cat who has asthma to take all his prednisolone syrup, I remove the dry food very early in the morning. A couple of hours later, I put a small amount of canned cat food in two separate color coded bowls so I know which has the medicine in it. I do not mix the syrup into the food. Instead I put tiny drops across the pile of food so when he licks the top of the canned food, he will lick the syrup. I feed the other cat in the kitchen and my sick cat eats in the dining room so they do not swap bowls. He usually eats half. I pick the bowls up then wait and hour to put the bowls down again to finish, then I put the dry food back on the floor. The vet said to give him 1.0 every other day, but I asked if .5 every day would be okay and the vet approved.

Is this flavored or does it have an odor and color? Our cat is on some now that has like a cherry smell and is pink, and we were hoping to find something either odorless or something less objectionable and more appetizing for him. Thanks!?
-
Compounded Prednisone is available in chicken, fish, or beef flavoring and has a clear to cloudy appearance.

My Chihuahua currently takes 0.25ml of liquid prednisone suspension (5 mg/ml per ounce). If I switch to 5 mg tablets what is the conversion? I'm guessing she would take one-quarter of a tablet, but I want to know for sure. Thanks!?
-
If your pet is currently taking 0.25 ml of liquid prednisone 5 mg/ml and you would like to switch to 5 mg tablets the conversion is 1.25 mg, which would be one-quarter of a tablet. Cutting tablets into four pieces leads to loss of medication and inaccurate dosages so we would recommend contacting your pet's veterinarian to see if switching from liquid prednisone to tablet form is the best treatment option for your pet.

Why is it necessary to refrigerate this drug? The first couple of bottles the vet forgot to tell us to refrigerate it and we used them over about six weeks and our dog didn't seem to have a problem. This time they told us to refrigerate it. Doing so makes it much thicker.?
-
Prednisone suspension doesn't need to be refrigerated and should be stored at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees fahrenheit.

I have Prednisolone 20mg/ml liquid suspension for my cat. Does it need to be refrigerated? Previously my vet said no but when I picked it up this morning the tech said to refrigerate. I'm having issues with my vet clinic and contradictory info they give out depending on who you ask; so Thought I would ask here. Thanks?

The storage recommendations for compounded prednisolone suspension may vary based on the formulation and pharmacy that is preparing the product. Follow the recommendations from your veterinarian on how to store the product you pick up from them. The prednisolone suspension prepared by VetRxDirect uses corn oil as the base vehicle and does not contain water. VetRxDirect recommends room temperature storage and to be used with 90 days of compounding. Thank you, VetRxDirect
