What is Phos-Bind by Rx Vitamins for Cats and Dogs?
- Phos-Bind is a dietary supplement of aluminum hydroxide that supports normal function and health of the kidneys in cats and dogs.
Why is Phos-Bind given to cats and dogs?
- Phos-Bind contains aluminum hydroxide that binds to dietary phosphorus in the bowel to reduce absorption of phosphorus in the body.
- Phos-Bind helps reduce serum levels of phosphorus and may help better manage chronic renal disease.
What else should I know about Phos-Bind?
- Phos-Bind is a tasteless, odorless, finely granulated powder.
- Highly palatable when blended with your cats or dogs meals.
- Aluminum toxicity has not been found to be a concern in cats and dogs.
- 35 gram powder comes with 1 scoop (1/8 tsp). 35 gram powder contains 90 scoops.
- 200 gram powder comes with 1 scoop (1/4 tsp). 200 gram powder contains 200 scoops.
What problems could my cat or dog have with Phos-Bind?
- It is recommended to consult with your veterinarian before using a nutritional supplement for your cat or dog.
How do you use Phos-Bind?
- Use as directed by your veterinarian.
- Manufacturer suggests giving 100 mg/kg by mouth once daily with meals. Dosage should be adjusted based on serial serum phosphorus determinations every 2 to 4 weeks or as indicated by your veterinarian.
- Manufacturer administration techniques: Aluminum hydroxide powder can be easily mixed with canned or fresh food. For dry food, place the kibbles in a plastic baggie with the powder and shake the baggie to mix it, which allows the powder to adhere to the dry food. You can also slightly warm the dry food in the microwave (5-8 seconds) and then shake the powder with the food in a baggie. *DO NOT MICROWAVE PHOS-BIND* The outer fatty coating of dry food (called digest) softens with warming and will let the powder attach more readily.

- 200 gram powder: Active ingredient per 1 scoop (1/4 tsp): Aluminum Hydroxide 500 mg.

Actually Tasteless
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 35g PowderMy Magneto was born with small kidneys so the doctor recommended this to help reduce the amount of phosphate build up. I was worried he would turn his nose at it because of the taste but I've mixed it with wet food and he gobbles it right up. I've even dusted it on dry food in a pinch and he didn't mind.-

Q & A

I purchased the phos bind 35 gram jar. Your website says that a level scoop is equal to 500 mgs. However the container says that a scoop is 250mgs. Also your website says that a scoop is equal to 1/2 teaspoon but I measured it and a level scoop appears to be equal to 1/4 teaspoon. Can you please explain the discrepancies? I am struggling to figure out the amount to give my cat. Thanks.?

The Phos-Bind powder comes in two sizes, 35 gram and 200 gram, and the scoop sizes are different for both products. For the 35 gram Powder, the scoop size is 1.25 cc (1/4 tsp equivalent) One scoop = 250 mg For the 200 gram Powder, the scoop size is 2.5 cc (1/2 tsp equivalent) One scoop = 500 mg

My product did not come with a scoop. I realize a scoop is 500mg of powder, but what is the volume of the scoop? 1/2 tsp? 1 tsp? I need to know so I can dose appropriately.?
-
The Phos-Bind should contain a very small scoop (about 1.5 inches in length) that can be found somewhere within the Phos-Bind powder so please be sure to check for the scoop included to accurately measure the medication. We have listed the sizes below. For the 35 gram Powder, the scoop size is 1.25 cc (1/4 tsp equivalent) One scoop = 250 mg For the 200 gram Powder, the scoop size is 2.5 cc (1/2 tsp equivalent) One scoop = 500 mg

Is the scoop included with the product 100mg? It is not clear if we should use a half scoop or full or what equals 100mg. There is nothing on the scoop indicating how much 100mg is. Thank you!?
-
A scoop is included with the Phos-Bind powder. 1 Leveled scoop of powder contains 500mg of Aluminum hydroxide, and the manufacturer recommends giving 100mg/kg daily with meals. For more information, you may click the "product insert tab" on the website page.

Will this remain effective if I pre-mix it into a liquid suspension with, say, chicken stock or a little peanutbutter and water? Or do I need to mix it "fresh" for each use??
-
There is no information available about the long term stability of the Phos-Bind if premixed with other ingredient. We recommend mixing fresh with each use to avoid any potential issues that could occur.

My dog is 11lb. How much should i give with each meal??
-
The manufacturer recommends giving 100 mg/kg daily, and 1 scoop contains 500mg. So an 11lb dog would get approximately 1 scoop. We recommend talking with your pet's veterinarian before giving this product.

"The manufacturer recommends giving 100 mg/kg daily, and 1 scoop contains 500mg. So an 11lb dog would get approximately 1 scoop. We recommend talking with your pet's veterinarian before giving this product". This is a answer you gave for someone wanting to know what to give their 11 lb dog. How can you tell them to give 100 mg daily and that 1 scoop contains 500 mg. You then tell them to give a scoop. So, it the answer 1/5th of a scoop for 100 mg or 1 scoop for 500 mg?

How big is the scoop in this product? Wondering roughly how much powder would be 3 scoops, ex teaspoon or more? Thanks!?
-
The measuring scoop that is included with Phos-Bind powder will contain around 0.5 grams in volume of powder per scoopful, which is less than a teaspoon.

My question is about dosage. The bottle says to give 100 mg daily with meals. Doesn't it need to be based on body weight? There's a big difference in a 10 pound cat and a 50 pound dog. I need to know how much to give to a 44 pound dog. Thanks?
-
Phos-Bind should be used in consultation with your pet's veterinarian and regular blood work. Your veterinarian should also determine the appropriate dosage for your pet. The manufacturer's recommended dosage for this product is 100 mg per kilogram (2.2lb) of body weight.
