What is Phos-Bind by Rx Vitamins for Cats and Dogs?

- Phos-Bind helps reduce serum levels of phosphorus and may help better manage chronic renal disease.
What else should I know about Phos-Bind?
- Phos-Bind is a tasteless, odorless, finely granulated powder.
- Highly palatable when blended with your cats or dogs meals.
- Aluminum toxicity has not been found to be a concern in cats and dogs.
- 35 gram powder comes with 1 scoop (1/8 tsp). 35 gram powder contains 90 scoops.
- 200 gram powder comes with 1 scoop (1/4 tsp). 200 gram powder contains 200 scoops.
What problems could my cat or dog have with Phos-Bind?
- It is recommended to consult with your veterinarian before using a nutritional supplement for your cat or dog.
How do you use Phos-Bind?
- Use as directed by your veterinarian.
- Manufacturer suggests giving 100 mg/kg by mouth once daily with meals. Dosage should be adjusted based on serial serum phosphorus determinations every 2 to 4 weeks or as indicated by your veterinarian.
- Manufacturer administration techniques: Aluminum hydroxide powder can be easily mixed with canned or fresh food. For dry food, place the kibbles in a plastic baggie with the powder and shake the baggie to mix it, which allows the powder to adhere to the dry food. You can also slightly warm the dry food in the microwave (5-8 seconds) and then shake the powder with the food in a baggie. *DO NOT MICROWAVE PHOS-BIND* The outer fatty coating of dry food (called digest) softens with warming and will let the powder attach more readily.

Great for ckd cat
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 35g PowderMy cat has ckd but recently had started gagging at the smell of his kidney food. All I can get him to eat is regular, but fancy wet food, so I've been adding this to the non renal diet food. It helps to keep him from absorbing so much phosphorus, which keeps him from getting toxic and miserable. This is a great product, wish my vet would've known about it and suggested it.-

Great price
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 200g PowderThis product has helped my cats quality of life. She was disgnosed with kidney disease a year ago, and her numbers have stayed stable since then. I give it to her in her food, either wet or dry. She doesn't have any issue with the flavor or texture. I am glad I can find the big pack here, and at a very good price. Cheaper than in other places, and shipped to Puerto Rico! Thank you.-

Great product, and palate friendly.
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 35g PowderMy dogs phosphate levels way above normal. This product brought her down to normal levels in 10 days. Plus, she doesn't seem to notice it in her food. Am encouraged so much, have already purchased a 2nd jar. -
Gel shortage alternative
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 200g PowderHad to switch from aluminum hydroxide gel to this powder because of a problem with the gel being backordered. The shortage is everywhere. So we had to figure out how to use this product. You definitely have to do your own homework. This product was at my door in 4 days. Does not mix well with water. We syringe feed our cat 4 times a day and 2 of those times we use the phos bind. It's too grainy, made Gracee gag so we put 1/8 tsp in a pill crusher with 1m of water and crushed it to a super fine slurry. Pick that up with a syringe and add another 1m water to pick up any remaining in crusher. She doesn't notice it in the food using this method. I emailed Vet Rx for help with dosage and never got a response. Did my own homework. Search for how to use phos bind. -

After a month, the jury is still out on this product
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 200g PowderOur vet suggested using this product with our cat who has recently been diagnosed with kidney disease. We are over a month into using this, and if we come even close to the dose the vet suggested, he throws up. We have deleted all food additives for him other than his k'd canned food and the Phos-Bind, but he is still throwing up. I am keeping my fingers crossed that he will adjust to this product and that it actually helps him. I will update this review in another month or so. -
Medication seems to be working.
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 35g PowderMy cat has kidney disease and my vet said this might help him feel more comfortable and slow his disease progression. The product came very quickly. It is easy to use and he eats it readily mixed with food.-
I am extraordinarily handsome.

Q & A

Can someone make a chart with a range of pet weights and dosages? A 1/5 of a tsp is ridiculous to measure. I do not want to be guessing and my vet has no clue about the amount of Phos Bind needed.?
-
My cat weighs 7.3 lbs. I have a 1/8 scoop. How much should my cat get a day. How much in teaspoons is 100gram. The product is RXVitamins. Give 100 mg with meals daily. 35 mg container?
-
The included scoop in the 35 gram container equals ⅛ teaspoon. One scoop (⅛ teaspoon) contains 250mg of Aluminum Hydroxide. It is recommended to use the included scoop for greater accuracy in dosing. According to the manufacturer, the recommended dose of Phos-Bind is 100 mg/kg once daily with meals. There are several factors that may influence how much your cat should be getting, so it is recommended to consult your veterinarian regarding any further questions or concerns regarding this medication in your cat.

My vet prescribed Phos-bind and my cat gets one scoop daily with his wet food. He weighs 15 lbs. Are there any side effects or adverse reactions which cause constipation in bowel movement. His stools are hard like pebbles and he strains t pass them.?
-
The active ingredient in Phos-Bind, aluminum hydroxide, is known to cause constipation. This is especially true in smaller animals like your cat. Please reach out to your veterinarian as this issue may need to be addressed. Please consult your veterinarian regarding any further questions or concerns regarding this medication in your cat.

I am frustrated as this does not come with a measuring spoon and so I have no idea how much to give to my 11lbs cat?
-
Phos-Bind is a dietary supplement of aluminum hydroxide that supports normal function and health of the kidneys in cats and dogs. According to the manufacturer, Rx Vitamins, their suggested dosing is 100 mg/kg by mouth once daily with meals. However, the actual dosage needs to be determined by your veterinarian. The 35 gram powder container comes with one scoop that is equivalent to ⅛ teaspoon (tsp). The 200 gram powder container comes with one scoop that is equivalent to ¼ teaspoon (tsp). The scoop in the container may have settled into the powder during transport, so it may need to be dug out. It is recommended to consult with your veterinarian for any other concerns or questions regarding the dosage of this product for your cat as they are most aware of your cat’s condition and needs.

Hi, How many of your spoons included with the 35g container would my 13 pound get PER DAY? thank you!?
-
For the 35 gram container, the scoop is 1.25 cc (¼ tsp) and measures 250 mg/scoop. The labeled directions for Phos-Bind is 100 mg/kg daily with meals. The manufacturer recommends that the total daily dose should be divided up and given with each meal. For a 13 pound cat or dog, the total number of scoops per day would be 2.36 scoops per day. However, dosage should be adjusted based on serial serum phosphorus values every 2-4 weeks or as indicated by your veterinarian. It is recommended to contact your veterinarian to determine the proper dosage and the directions to administer Phos-Bind for your cat or dog. I received the "New Finer Powder" product which has a 1/8 scoop instead of the previous product that was more granular with a 1/4 scoop. Are the dosing instructions now different with the New Finer Powder for a maximum amount of 1/8 scoop per day instead of the 1/4 scoop in the previous product? That is, do I now need to change the amount I give my cat now that the product has been remade??
-
The new ⅛ scoop is equivalent to the previous ¼ scoop as they are both 250mg per scoop. The labeled directions for Phos-Bind is 100 mg/kg daily with meals. The manufacturer recommends that the total daily dose should be divided up between meals. Based upon how much your cat weighs, it will determine how many scoops you should give them. Please speak to your veterinarian as they can help you determine the proper dosage to administer to your cat.

Hi, is this product made from a gel that has been turned into a powder? Apparently, that's the type of aluminum hydroxide recommended by my vet. Thank you?
-
According to the manufacturer, Phos-Bind is made from a dried gel and converted into a fine powder.

There seems to be incorrect and/or confusing information in the product description. 35 g powder contains 250 g of Aluminum Hydroxide : how can 35g of powder contain 250 g of AlOH? [It should be '250 mg AlOH' based on the product pictures]. Reducing the potential for confusion will be a good thing. For the following, maybe the "scoops" are different sizes? If that's the case, add in parentheses the scoop size, e.g. 90 (1/4 tsp) scoops. Phos-Bind 35g container = 90 scoops Phos-Bind 200g container = 200 scoops?
-
Can this be mixed with a pro-biotic paste? I use the Proviable paste and want to make sure it doesn't contain anything that would adhere to or react with the Phos-Bind.?
-
According to the manufacturer, the kaolin and pectin in Proviable paste could delay absorption of some medications, so the administration of the paste should be separated by 1-2 hours from other medications.

I am confused by the dosage information for this product. Previously you answered, " A scoop is included with the Phos-Bind powder. 1 Leveled scoop of powder contains 500mg of Aluminum hydroxide, and the manufacturer recommends giving 100mg/kg daily with meals." So for a 100mg do I give a 5th of a scoop and is a 100mg given at each meal? Does it matter how much the dog weighs??
-
Phos-Bind comes in two different size containers, 35 grams and 200 grams, each with their own scoop. For the 35 gram container, the scoop is 1.25 cc (¼ tsp) and measures 250 mg/scoop. The 200 gram container has a scoop size of 2.5 cc (½ tsp) and measures 500 mg/scoop. The labeled directions for Phos-Bind is 100 mg/kg daily with meals. The manufacturer recommends that the total daily dose should be divided up and given with each meal. The weight of the animal is important, because the labeled dosage of Phos-Bind is based on weight: 100 mg is given per 1 kilogram (2.2 lbs) of body weight. The dosage of this product will also vary based on the individual needs of your pet, and it is recommended that your pet’s blood values be checked periodically to ensure the correct dosage. Your veterinarian can help determine the proper dosage and provide you with the directions to administer Phos-Bind to your pet.

The Verified Reply from VetRxDirect is in error and is probably causing doses double the proper amount. The label on my jar of Phos-Bind clearly states: "500mg/0.25tsp".
