Q & A
-
why does Normosol R come in two different acidities: pH 6.6 or pH 7.4? what is the difference to the cat with kidney disease? does it matter which one they get? My vet didn't tell me there were different types, she said nothing about she just wrote down, "Normosol-R Fluids 1 Liter Give subcutaneously once a week."?
-
There are some medical conditions in which a pet would need the more acidic Normosol R (pH 6.6) over the more basic Normosol R (pH 7.4). Please speak with your veterinarian to clarify what product is best for your cat’s specific conditions

We've recently switched to using Normasol from LR for one of our CKD kitties because of her hypercalcemia. In reading through these questions, it seems Normasol spoils, especially if exposed to heat. The specification link you posted is dead so my question is: I give my cats 100 mls every other day, clearly I can't use the entire bag up at once so is it at risk of spoiling? Additionally, we warm our kitty's fluids up before administration so it's more comfortable for them, is this something you cannot do with this product??
-
Normosol R should be allowed to warm to room temperature (1-2 hours) prior to each administration. Normosol R should not be exposed to direct light. Do not use Normosol R if the fluid becomes cloudy or discolored, this usually means that the fluids have become contaminated with bacteria and are no longer safe to use. Please consult with your veterinarian with any further questions or concerns regarding this product. Your veterinarian will be able to provide specific instructions for use and proper disposal of the bag.

On the Vetivex Veterinary pHyLyte, pH 7.4 fluids bag, it has 2 ports at the bottom. Are those ports identical? Or are they each for a specialized use??
-
According to the manufacturer, the ports at the bottom of the Vetivex brand fluid bags are identical, and can be used for inserting the IV administration set spike or for injecting additives to the fluid.

We recently switched from lactated ringers to normosol, for our cat with kidney disease, administering it via SQ. Our cat does not react to the needle insertion, but since the change is reacting once the infusion starts. She appears to be in pain. Could it be the potassium causing a burning or stinging pain? Thanks.?
-
There have been reports of pet owners stating that a change in subcutaneous fluids have appeared to cause discomfort in their pet. Observations such as growling, crying, shifting about, and wanting to get away are sometimes noted. The exact reasons for the discomfort with the change may not always be clear. Please report this to your veterinarian so they can make an adjustment if it is deemed necessary.

1. What compatible IV line options do you have? The link that you previously posted no longer works. 2. Do IV lines need to be periodically changed??
-
If you have to give subcutaneous (under the skin) IV fluids to your cat due to dehydration or renal failure, your veterinarian may prescribe an IV Venoset with this product. We carry these as well. Search Venoset on our site. It is a generic product so it may change from time to time but the venosets we provide should be compatible with any fluids we send. In regard to the question about changing the IV line, it is beneficial to change IV lines every time to ensure that accidental contamination does not occur. Contact your veterinarian and follow their directions carefully for how often these lines should be changed as this depends on rate of use and aseptic technique.

Can you tell me if Normosol R should have a vinegary smell??
-
The contents of Normosol R are odorless. The sodium acetate may give off a vinegar/acidic smell when heated to decomposition. To prevent decomposition, it is recommended that Normosol R is stored in a cool, dry place at room temperature away from heat and direct sunlight. Also, double check expiration dates on the packaging. Please contact the manufacturer if you have any additional questions or concerns regarding the integrity of this product.

I have 3 bags of normosol, 1 from my vet and 2 purchased from here. The bag material from the vet is clear, but when I opened the ones from here, the bag material itself looks cloudy and cannot discern if the fluid is cloudy. They are different lots and expirations. Do you have any info on changes to manufacturing materials? I'm going to spike one and pour off some fluid to check its clarity, but wanted to ask.?
-
Normosol R is supplied as a clear fluid. The manufacturer of this product may differ based on the size and pH of the product ordered. Please contact the manufacturer listed on your product for specific questions regarding changes to the manufacturing materials.

Cloudy means spoiled. Ask for a new bag!

Do normosol-r bags expire once they are punctured when being used for SQ fluid therapy?
-
From its package insert (https://vetrxdirect.naccvp.com/product/basic/view/1024021?u=country&p=msds&prodnum=1024021), it contains no antimicrobial agents. Discard unused portion. Once bags are punctured, unused portion should not be used again after first use.
