Q & A

What is the product # of Normosol R 1000 ml bag? And is the one posted here Plasma-Lyte A or Normosoal? I have used both in the past and did not think they were interchangeable.?
-
Plasmalyte A is the same as Normosol R. Normosol is essentially a generic version of Plasmalyte.

What is the difference between regular Normosol R and Normosol R/Plasmalyte? Can they be used interchangeably for a cat with possible liver disease??
-
Normosol R and Plasmalyte are two different products used for fluid replacement in your pet. Both are a sterile, nonpyrogenic isotonic solution of balanced electrolytes. There are some differences between the products such as concentration of sodium acetate (Normosol R has 222 mg and Plasmalyte has 368 mg) and the pH of the product (Normosol pH 6.6 and Plasmalyte pH 7.4). We recommend contacting your pet's veterinarian to verify which product is best for your pet.

My dog has cancer and gets dehydrated frequent diarrhea and lathary. My vet recommend 1 to 2 liters of normosol but stated the ringer product would be fine too. Which one has more electrolytes and hydrating ingredients??
-
Fluids in the context of dehydration are meant to replace water and electrolytes. There are a variety of products available to achieve fluid replacement, each having a different balance of electrolytes. When comparing Normosol R and lactated ringer's one does not necessarily have more total electrolytes than the other, but different concentrations of similar electrolytes. The hydrating ingredient in these products is sterile water. The amount of sterile water in each will be similar in similar sized bags. If your veterinarian recommends the use of either product for the hydration of your dog, then either product may be used to achieve this goal. Thank you, VetRxDirect
