Can Minocycline be given w/Clavamox. Dog was in a fight but has been taking Minocycline for Lyme Disease. Weighs 60 lbs?
-
Minocycline is a human labeled prescription tetracycline antibiotic used in both dogs and cats. Clavamox is a veterinary labeled prescription penicillin antibiotic combined with a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which enhances the penicillin activity. There is the potential for a drug-drug interaction with the concurrent usage of tetracyclines and penicillins. The clinical significance of this interaction is currently unclear. It is recommended that you contact your veterinarian to ensure they are aware of the prior Clavamox usage and to determine if the concurrent usage of these medications is the best therapy option for your dog. Small breed dog 7 pounds can I give him minocycline 50 mgs for gum disease ?
-
Kita, The use of antibiotics for routine treatment of dental disease is a debated topic among veterinary professionals. Antibiotic administration may be used as an adjunctive therapy in specific cases or following tooth extraction or professional cleaning. Minocycline is not routinely used in gum disease, however, the your veterinarian may decide that minocycline is the best option for your dog. Ask your veterinarian to help you develop a plan specific to your pet that you can implement at home to improve your dog’s oral health. Thorough execution of this plan plus periodic professional cleanings, will help improve oral hygiene and will lead to a healthier life for the pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My dog was put on Minocycline 100mg capsules twice/day for 30 days to treat Lyme disease. She is a 29lb shetland sheepdog. Since she's been on it she will not eat her dog food but will eat table foods like chicken, eggs etc. Is this temporary??
-
Unfortunately stomach upset and intestinal side effects are very common with minocycline. It is very important that you stay on track and finish the course of minocycline. These effects should go away once the minocycline is complete. Contact your veterinarian to discuss these side effects if they become worse or your dog exhibits other concerning behavior. Thank you, VetRxDirect

1. What does the asterisk on the label indicate in regard to the dose/content? 2. What are the inactive ingredients included in this med? ~Thanks?
-
Ginger, The asterisk states that each 100mg capsule (or 50mg capsule) will contain minocycline hydrochloride equivalent to 100mg of minocycline (or 50mg of minocyline). The dosing of minocycline capsules is expressed in terms of minocylcine, not the salt form minocycline hydrochloride. Each 100mg (or 50mg) capsule will contain 100mg (or 50mg) of minocycline as prescribed by your veterinarian. Inactive ingredients will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and may vary by strength within a manufacturer. If this is a concern for you, please contact the pharmacy and we will be happy to provide you with the inactive ingredients for the manufacturer and strength we currently have in stock. my dog will not take this capsule, can I open it & mix with water and sugar to get it down her?
-
Katie, The contents of the minocycline capsule may be removed and added to water or mixed with food for a short period of time prior to administration. It is important that the pet gets the entire amount of the prescribed dose in order to treat the infection. The use of minocycline should be avoided in pregnancy and young animals.
