Messy to use
From undisclosedComments about Famotidine Suspension (Compounded)The medicine is fine but the bottle and syringe are not user friendly. Syringe is red so you cannot see if the medicine drew up properly and then it broke after two doses. I cannot find another syringe that is the right size for the special cap on the bottle. It is very messy to use so I will no longer order from this company.

Q & A

How long will the 50 mL bottle last for my cat??
-
How long a medication will last depends on the strength and dose prescribed by your veterinarian, and frequency that you are giving it. Please contact us at [email protected] or speak with your veterinarian for more assistance. Please note that the famotidine suspension currently [9/19/2019] compounded by our pharmacy has a shelf-life of just over 80 days, so VetRxDirect will ship at most an 80-day supply.

Can the famotidine be given subQ or is orally the best method. The vat has been taking it in a pill pocket and recently started to bypass/reject the pill pocket altogether .?
-
Famotidine is available in an injectable form. Please consult with your veterinarian for their recommendations on the most effective way to administer famotidine to your cat.

Why does it need a prescription, when one can buy famotidine over the counter? Also, is the medicine's taste well hidden by the suspension's flavoring??
-
Famotidine suspensions are considered a prescription only product, but you can buy famotidine tablets without a prescription. This product is made with a fish flavoring which helps mask the taste, however individual preferences of cats and dogs may vary. Contact your veterinarian to see which medication is the best for your cat or dog.

Our vet said we could try a quarter of a 10mg tablet of Pepcid AC which comes out to 2.5 mg. In other words we cut the tablet in quarters and it was very difficult to give to the cat. Can we achieve 2.5 mg from your liquid compound??
-
Please contact your veterinarian to determine if famotidine suspension is appropriate for your cat.
Verified Answer -
Yes, a single 2.5mg dose can be achieved from famotidine suspension. The amount of volume to be administered to your cat is based on the strength of famotidine (5mg/mL, 10mg/mL, or 20 mg/mL). For example, to achieve 2.5 mg from famotidine 5mg/mL, you would give 0.5 mL.

does this need to be kept cold during shipping? the info sheet says it needs to be stored in the fridge.?
-
No, unlike many commercially available suspensions, our compounded famotidine suspension is an oil-based product and it does not need to be refrigerated. The information in the handout is referring to water-based suspensions that are commercially available for use in humans. Many apologies for any confusion that this may have caused. Steps have been taken to clarify this distinction on the website.
