I've been using cisapride capsules for my 12 year-old cat for the past three years. It's very difficult to find and extremely expensive, but it helps the poor guy out with constipation. Vetrxdirect has the best price I've found.

No Effect
We tried this on our cat who has a history of constipation and borderline megacolon. While on this medicine, he went 7 days, then 6 days, without a bowel movement. I'm sure it works for some, and it's definitely worth a try, but he was on it for two weeks and we saw no effect.

We are able to compound cisapride in the form of a capsule, suspension, or transdermal gel. Cisapride does require a prescription from your pet's veterinarian before the product can be ordered. The suspension is the only flavored formulation available.

trying to decide between capsule & transdermal. transdermal to ear i'd like but just afraid cat will wipe off with paw. is the capsule given entirely by mouth or is it sprinkled on food? also how big is the capsule?

My cat is 10 lbs and has just started on Cisapride suspension 5 ml 2x day. He hated it, heavy thick drool. I am considering the capsules but don't know the comparable dosage?

The powder does not have a flavor and the capsule can be opened and added to food. The powder will be bitter so adding it to something, like the cat's food, will help mask the bitterness. It is important for the cat to get the full dose the vet prescribed so make sure it is mixed with an amount of food the cat will eat all at once.

My cat is getting 0.25 ml cisapride (10 mg/ml) suspension oil based, chicken flavor, from compounding pharmacy and really dislikes it. We've tried mixing it with tuna juice etc, and she still shakes her head, drools and tries to spit it out. It does seem to be helping combined with lactulose. Do you suggest a transdermal gel patch instead? Or, if capsules, how large are they, and are they easy to get a cat to swallow? If they don't take capsules well, can they be opened, and the powder then mixed into cat food or something they will eat? I'm trying to work with my vet, but she hasn't come up with any solution. Thanks?

Cisapride is also compounded in capsules and as a transdermal gel that is applied topically. The capsules are made to be administered whole, with a smooth coating a relatively small size. Can the capsule be opened and the powder poured out? At present, my vet gives me a small blue pill that I crush and put in a syringe along with a powdered stool softener. Add water, shake till dissolved, and "shoot" it into the cats mouth. Can I do that with the capsule form? Also do I need a prescription? Thank you, Carol?

My cat is currently prescribed compounded cisapride in the form of small diamond-shaped pills which melt easily and he usually eats them like a treat prior to his meal. How difficult is it to administer these capsules to a cat and is it okay to just sprinkle the capsule contents on his food rather than waiting 15-30 minutes prior to feeding? Thanks?

If mixed with your cat's meal, it is important to ensure that your cat consume his meal in its entirety in order to receive the full dose of medication.
