What is Viokase-V for Dogs and Cats?
- Viokase-V relieves the symptoms of Pancreatic Insufficiency Disorder (PID) in dogs and cats. PID is also known as EPI, or Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency.
- This prescription medication replaces the pancreatic enzymes that your dog or cat doesn’t produce but needs to digest the protein, sugar, and fat in food.
Why do cats and dogs use Viokase-V?
- Dogs and cats with maldigestion, or Pancreatic Insufficiency Disorder (PID)/ Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI), suffer from weight loss, discomfort, and hair loss because they can’t properly digest the nutrients in food.
- The condition shuts down the pancreas, which produces digestive enzymes.
- Viokase-V replaces those enzymes so that your pet can digest needed proteins, sugars, and fats from food.
What else should I know about Viokase-V?
- Improves digestion and nutrition absorption in pets with PID/ EPI.
- Fast acting.
- Powder form mixes easily with food.
- Pancreatic enzymes made from a pork product.
- There are approximately 2.8 grams per teaspoonful.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Viokase-V?
- Cats often do not like the taste of the pancreatic enzymes powder and may be more likely to take tablets or capsules made from crushed tablets. Some cats also may eat one brand of enzymes and not another. Talk to your veterinarian if you are havign trouble with medicating your cat.
How do you use Viokase-V?
- Viokase-V works best when mixed with food and food is allowed to sit before feeding. Always follow your veterinarian's directions for use.
- Avoid inhaling powder as it may cause lung irritation or worsen asthma.
- Avoid contacting your skin with the powder. Wash any powder from your skin as soon as possible.
What is in Viokase-V?
- Viokase-V contains pancreatic enzymes that break down the nutrients in food.
- These enzymes typically come from pork sources.
Will I get what I see in the picture?

Terrific remedy for pancreatic enzyme insufficiency.
From undisclosedComments about Viokase-VDog was rapidly losing weight; pancreatic enzymes low. Our vet recommended Viokase. Works very well-- weight returned to normal, and it seems we can slowly start decreasing her portions-- back to original portions. Needs to be mixed with water into a hard paste and added to food -- took a little while to get used to taste, but after a few days, no problem at all. Lifetime use. -
This finally got our baby better!
From Howell, miComments about Viokase-VWe tried less expensive product that didn't work, this finally worked and our dog is healthy again! However, the cost of this per month plus the food we need is almost a house pmt, but anything for our baby to get better but this is a lifelong ordeal. I am just happy we found something that worked. We also don't like waiting 15 minutes before serving the food/powder mix to dog but we found it works best and they don't get mouth sores. -

Q & A

My dog has been on Viokase for about 6 months and has responded well. But he is still so skinny. I know it is supposed to be well incorporated into his food so that it digests with the food. But if he drinks a bowl of water right after he eats, would that not flush the powder off the food in his stomach? I wonder if I should hold the water back for an hour or so after he eats so the enzymes stick to the food properly. Thoughts??
-
According to the manufacturer, VIOKASE-V powder is added to moistened dog food (canned or dry). Thorough mixing is necessary to bring the enzymes into close contact with the food particles. Incubation at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before feeding appears to enhance the digestive process. Frequent feeding, at least 3 times daily is important. The manufacturer also states that the dosage may be adjusted by a veterinarian according to the severity of the pancreatic exocrine deficiency and weight of the animal. There is no information regarding water ingestion affecting the efficacy of this medication. However, Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook recommends water or food right after dosing solid dosage forms of Pancrelipase (capsules, tablets), to reduce the risk of esophageal damage. If you have any additional questions or concerns regarding the use of this medication for your dog, please consult with your veterinarian.

Viokase-V and PanaKare Plus (powders) both contain 71,400 units of lipase, 388,000 units of protease, and 460,000 units of amylase per teaspoonful, but in addition, the PanaKare Plus contains vitamins, yet is considered a second tier choice compared to Viokase-V. You might consider the vitamins a beneficial additive. Why then is the Viokase-V the preferred supplement? We started our mini GoldenDoodle on Viokase-V, but switched to PanaKare Plus and saw no difference. Now, however, I wonder if I should switch back. Her poo frequently seems incompletely digested. She may have irritable bowel. We needed a specialty vet to diagnose the problem in the first place, so we're trying to see what we should do before hiring the big guns. But my question is: Is Viokase-V a more efficient product than PanaKare Plus, something that can't be compensated for by increasing the amount fed? Otherwise, why the difference in price??
-
Both of these products are indicated as a digestive aid or replacement therapy where digestion of protein, carbohydrate and fat is inadequate due to exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. However, these medications have different active ingredients. Currently, there is no information comparing the efficacy of these products. Viokase-V powder is manufactured by Zoetis, and by definition, Viokase-V is activated whole raw pancreas; a pancreatic enzyme concentrate of porcine origin. It contains standardized amylase, protease and lipase activities plus esterases, peptidases, nucleases and elastase. PanaKare Plus Powder is manufactured by Neogen and by definition, is a pancreatic enzyme concentrate of porcine origin fortified with vitamins A, D3 and E. It is recommended that you consult with your veterinarian about any questions or concerns regarding these medications and your dog. Your veterinarian will be able to determine which product best suits your dog’s needs.

Why is the price for 8oz more than twice as much as 4oz? Should be less than twice the amount.?
-
Because the 4oz has not been available recently, we haven't received current prices on the item. We've gone ahead and changed the price to prevent confusion. This price is subject to change if and when the 4oz is available again. Thank you for pointing out this issue.

It can take time for questions to be approved through the system that moderates our Q and A, and it takes time for our pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to research each question before posting an answer. Any time you have an emergency situation, you should always contact your pet's veterinarian for the fastest, most immediate assistance. I believe the information you were looking for was posted to your question earlier in the week, but I will post the Viokase answer again here. It is possible for your dog to continue to lose weight after discontinuing this medication. It is most likely not due to the medication since she isn’t taking it anymore, and probably due to other reasons. As long as she seems to be feeling normal (regular appetite, energy and mood) and the her veterinarian has looked over her, it is probably nothing to be concerned about. However, if she has any changes, or you still feel concerned, we would recommend that you consult a veterinarian. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Should a dog continue to lose weight after finishing the prescription to Viokase? A vet prescribed this drug to my dog and she lost over half her body weight in about 6 weeks and continues to lose weight, I took her back to the vet & he said she is OK.?
