PrednisoLONE Suspension (Compounded) Rx
I'm sorry but our pharmacy is no longer making specially compounded medications. We do sell comercially prepared PrenisTab (prednisolone) tablets. If you are looking for a new compounding pharmacy, you may be able to find one by consulting with your veterinarian or searching for an accredited PCAB Compouning Pharmacy on the Accreditation Commission for Health Care's website.
What is the PrednisoLONE Suspension for Dogs and Cats?
- PrednisoLONE and PredniSONE are two prescription glucocorticoid steroid medications that are commonly confused.
- PredniSONE is converted to the active component PrednisoLONE by the liver.
- PrednisoLONE is often used to treat inflammation, to suppress the immune system, to replace or supplement adrenal insufficient animals, or to inhibit the growth or spread of tumors.
- Horses, cats, and pets with liver failure will need to be given PrednisoLONE instead of PredniSONE to achieve the desired treatment because they are unable to convert PredniSONE efficiently to PrednisoLONE.
- In order to have the best treatment possible for you cat, PrednisoLONE should be considered. Cats cannot convert PredniSONE completely to PrednisoLONE, so only part of the dose is able to exert its effect.
- The oral suspension is a flavored liquid that may be easier to dose than tablets.
Why do cats and dogs use PrednisoLONE?
- PrednisoLONE may be prescribed to treat hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease).
- PrednisoLONE may also be prescribed to reduce inflammation, suppress the immune system, or as an anticancer agent.
What else should I know about PrednisoLONE?
- Flavored oral suspension is a liquid that may be easier to dose than tablets.
- The suspension is oil-based and should be stored at room temperature. It does not need to be refrigerated.
What problems could my dog or cat have with PrednisoLONE?
- When using PrednisoLONE, veterinarians want to use the least amount of medication needed to effectively treat your pet to reduce the side effects.
- PrednisoLONE has many side effects. Side effects are more likely with long term use and higher doses.
- The most common side effects of PrednisoLONE are increased appetite, thirst, and need to urinate.
- Dogs may have serious side effects such as stomach or intestinal ulcers, perforation, or bleeding. If your dog stops eating, or you notice signs such as high fever, black, tarry stools, or bloody vomit, contact your veterinarian immediately.
How do you use PrednisoLONE?
- PrednisoLONE should be given with food. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Do not stop giving PrednisoLONE without talking to your veterinarian as serious side effects may result.
What is in PrednisoLONE?
- PrednisoLONE is a glucocorticoid or hormone that breaks down fats, carbohydrates, and proteins so that they can be used to fuel the body in times of stress.
- PredniSONE is converted to the active component PrednisoLONE by the liver.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- This PrednisoLONE Suspension is a compounded medication. The ingredients will be mixed specially for your dog or cat in our pharmacy.
Is it important for my dog or cat to finish all of the PrednisoLONE?
- Dogs and cats may use PrednisoLONE for different lengths of time. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.
- Do not stop giving PrednisoLONE without talking to your veterinarian as serious side effects may result.
Who makes this PrednisoLONE Suspension?
- This PrednisoLONE Suspension is hand-made in our pharmacy.

This medicine helps by cat and my wallet!
From UndisclosedComments about PrednisoLONE Suspension (Compounded) (Chicken) 5mg/mL, 60mLMy 16 year old cat (Simba) suffers from GI issues. The drug prescribed by his vet was "fillable" at a local pharmacy but after filling the script there once, I discovered Vet Rx and saved over $20.00 per refill.-

Tasty fish-flavor available!
From UndisclosedComments about PrednisoLONE Suspension (Compounded) (Fish) 3mg/mL, 30mLMy cat is on oral, liquid prednisolone for asthma and the only "flavor" our vet had was a sweet, cherry-flavored one which she really didn't like. I found a fish-flavored version of it here and she seems to like that. She's not crazy about having something squirted into her mouth, naturally, but with the cherry-flavored one there would be lots of grimacing and coughing; not so with the fishy one. Much less traumatic for both of us!-
Happy kitty

Perfect for cats
From UndisclosedComments about PrednisoLONE Suspension (Compounded)Perfect product for cats, it is fish or chicken flavored so my kitty swallows it without any problems. This formula helped my cat a lot. All other prednisolone suspensions currently available form other vendors are made with cherry flavor, which is unacceptable.

Hi, I need to give my cat with ibd 5 mg of prednisolone per day. Currently, he takes the medi-melt form of this medication. He takes it easily when I put fortiflora as a topping on it but he is not keen on it otherwise. He is very resistant to pilling so I may need a compounded form of the med unless the basic pill has a mild or no flavor that I could disguise with a topping. I have many rescue cats & I am having difficulty continuing to pay for all their meds. Do you recommend the suspension version of this med &, if so, what is the most economical way to buy it? Can the suspension be placed in food? Does the plain pill have a strong flavor? Can it be placed in food or disguised with a topping? Thank you.?
-
The compounded prednisolone suspension is available in a variety of flavors including fish, chicken, and beef to help make the medication easier to give to your pet. The 5 mg suspension is sold in 15mL, 30mL, and 60mL bottles. Due to the beyond-use date of the medication, orders are limited to a 50 day supply. If your cats is difficult to administer oral medications to, the prednisolone is also compounded as a transdermal gel. The transdermal gel is applied topically to a hairless portion of skin, commonly the inside of the ear lobe, and is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. The gel is supplied in a premeasured 1mL syringe that contains 10 doses of 5mg in 0.1mL increments. Because of the beyond-use date, orders are limited to an 80 day supply for the gel. Please consult with your veterinarian to determine if a compounded medication best suits your pet's needs. Thank you, VetRxDirect

What color is the prednisolone syrup? Ive had it prescribed for my cat and it has usually been red in color, the current bottle is clear. I'm concerned its the wrong medication! Thank you for your time.?
-
The color of compounded suspensions can vary based on factors including the drug concentration, flavor additive and/or suspension vehicle used. Also, some commercially available concentrations of prednisolone oral solution for human use that may have been prescribed by your veterinarian in the past are red in color. Please contact VetRxDirect to speak with a customer service representative if you have more questions. Thank you, VetRxDirect

From the instruction sheet that came with the aerosol chamber, it appears that the medication I need comes in a Metered Dose Inhaler. I can't tell if any of the Prednisolone entries is the correct one. Please help! Thank you very much.?

John, The AeroKat is made to be used with human-labeled prescription inhalers like the bronchodilator albuterol or the corticosteroid fluticasone. Most often, cat's are prescribed both drugs as the fluticasone is a maintenance drug and albuterol is used during asthma attacks. Your cat's veterinarian will prescribe the best combination of inhalers for your pet. Read our treatments for asthma in cats blog post for more information. Let us know if this helps, VetRxDirect
