Why do dogs use Pilocarpine?
- Veterinarians prescribe Pilocarpine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution as an effective remedy for dogs with primary glaucoma or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS)—also called “dry eye.”
- Neurogenic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a disorder of the tear glands that causes insufficient tear production.
- Dogs can have dry eye because of disease of the immune system or an injury.
- Some breeds are also prone to dry eye, including Cocker Spaniels, Lhasa Apsos, and Bulldogs.

- Side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, increased salivation, increased urination, and coughing. Contact your veterinarian if these are persistant or worsening.
How do you use Pilocarpine?
- Use proper administration techniques to avoid contamination of the Pilocarpine. Keep the cap on the bottle when not in use.
- Wait 5 minutes after placing the Pilocarpine in the eye before administering any other eye medications.
What is in Pilocarpine?

Q & A

I know this is probably a dumb question I have to ask because you never no..can these be harmful to the human eye???
-
Pilocarpine Ophthalmic Solution is available by prescription from a doctor to treat glaucoma, a condition in which increased pressure in the eye can lead to gradual loss of vision in humans. Similar to other prescription drugs, pilocarpine has reports of common side effects not limited headache, eye discomfort or blurred vision and more serious but uncommon side effects of difficulty breathing, sweating, muscle tremors and more. Certain eye drops like pilocarpine are available for humans have been proven to be safe for dogs but should NOT be shared. To avoid confusion, we recommend storing eye drops used in dogs away from human eye drops.

In December my dog used these drops in her food because she did not let me put them in her eye. Her problem started again and today I put on drop in each eye and not her eyes are red and blood shot. I assume this is a reaction to the medication. What should I do??
-
This medication can be used to treat primary glaucoma or dry-eye (neurogenic keratoconjunctivitis sicca) in dogs. When used to treat glaucoma, the recommended dose is 1 drop into the affected eye 3 times daily. When used to treat dry eye, the recommended dose is 2 drops/20lbs of a 2% solution in food twice daily. Follow specific dosing directions from your veterinarian. This medication has a low pH and when it is administered to the eye, it can cause irritation. This medication is also used in humans and these symptoms usually resolve with about 3 days of continued use. Consult your vet to determine if you should continue giving these drops and if they should be instilled in her eye or added to her food. Thank you, VetRxDirect
