What is Phos-Bind by Rx Vitamins for Cats and Dogs?
- Phos-Bind is a dietary supplement of aluminum hydroxide that supports normal function and health of the kidneys in cats and dogs.
Why is Phos-Bind given to cats and dogs?
- Phos-Bind contains aluminum hydroxide that binds to dietary phosphorus in the bowel to reduce absorption of phosphorus in the body.
- Phos-Bind helps reduce serum levels of phosphorus and may help better manage chronic renal disease.
What else should I know about Phos-Bind?
- Phos-Bind is a tasteless, odorless, finely granulated powder.
- Highly palatable when blended with your cats or dogs meals.
- Aluminum toxicity has not been found to be a concern in cats and dogs.
- 35 gram powder comes with 1 scoop (1/8 tsp). 35 gram powder contains 90 scoops.
- 200 gram powder comes with 1 scoop (1/4 tsp). 200 gram powder contains 200 scoops.
What problems could my cat or dog have with Phos-Bind?
- It is recommended to consult with your veterinarian before using a nutritional supplement for your cat or dog.
How do you use Phos-Bind?
- Use as directed by your veterinarian.
- Manufacturer suggests giving 100 mg/kg by mouth once daily with meals. Dosage should be adjusted based on serial serum phosphorus determinations every 2 to 4 weeks or as indicated by your veterinarian.
- Manufacturer administration techniques: Aluminum hydroxide powder can be easily mixed with canned or fresh food. For dry food, place the kibbles in a plastic baggie with the powder and shake the baggie to mix it, which allows the powder to adhere to the dry food. You can also slightly warm the dry food in the microwave (5-8 seconds) and then shake the powder with the food in a baggie. *DO NOT MICROWAVE PHOS-BIND* The outer fatty coating of dry food (called digest) softens with warming and will let the powder attach more readily.
What is in Phos-Bind?
- 35 gram powder: Active ingredient per 1 scoop (1/8 tsp): Aluminum Hydroxide 250 mg.
- 200 gram powder: Active ingredient per 1 scoop (1/4 tsp): Aluminum Hydroxide 500 mg.

Actually Tasteless
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 35g PowderMy Magneto was born with small kidneys so the doctor recommended this to help reduce the amount of phosphate build up. I was worried he would turn his nose at it because of the taste but I've mixed it with wet food and he gobbles it right up. I've even dusted it on dry food in a pinch and he didn't mind.-

Q & A

I'm buying this product for my cat. I read dosage is 100 milligrams/kilogram, 100 mg is the daily dosage my vet recommends as well. Is the scoop that is provided in the jar, equivalent to 100mg? If not, what will the equivalent be for 100mg? Thanks!?
-
The scoop provided with Phos-Bind powder, when full, is equivalent to 500 mg of aluminum hydroxide powder. If your veterinarian recommended 100mg as the daily dose your pet's dose will be ⅕ scoop which is 100mg. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My vet prescribed a 1 ml dose orally in a liquid form for my cat with kidney problems. How do I administer this in a liquid form? Are there directions on how to mix??
-
The manufacturer of Phos-Bind does not provide information on mixing the powder into a liquid form. The 1ml dose recommended by your veterinarian is a volume measurement and would need to be associated with an appropriate strength (ie. 60mg/ml for example) to ensure the best possible outcomes for your pet. Speak with your veterinarian for further clarification. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Is this powder tasteless....and if not pls describe the taste?
-
The active ingredient aluminum hydroxide is known to leave behind a "chalky taste." Powdered formulations of aluminum hydroxide are known to be easier to administer than liquids or suspensions. This medication can be mixed with food for easier administration. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I am wondering if the product has a taste or odor. My dog will not eat anything that I put on her food that alters the taste or changes the odor of her food. I have been told that this product is tasteless and odorless, although I want to check with you specifically before I order.?
-
Phos-Bind contains Aluminum Hydroxide. The chemical description of aluminum hydroxide lists the product as a white, tasteless, and odorless powder. The manufacturer does not list any specific odors or tastes of the product on the label. This product is recommended to be given just before feeding or can be mixed with food. Talk with your veterinarian about different administration techniques and recommended dosages for your dog. Thank you, VetRxDirect
