What is Optimmune for Cats and Dogs?

  • Optimmune is a prescription eye ointment that contains the immunosuppressant Cyclosporine.
  • Dogs can suffer from a range of eye conditions that cause dryness, discharge, and discomfort.
  • Optimmune can help relieve the swelling and irritation caused by persistent eye conditions caused by immune system disorders.

Why do cats and dogs use Optimmune?

  • Optimmune is often prescribed to treat two of the most common eye conditions in dogs -- keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK).
  • Optimmune is also prescribed to treat other immune-mediated eye problems.

What else should I know about Optimmune?

  • Optimmune will control symptoms of KCS and CSK, but will not cure the conditions. Lifetime use is required.
  • Store Optimmune at room temperature away from moisture and sunlight.
  • November 2023 update: Please note that the manufacturer Merck recently switched from a 5 gram tube to a 10 gram tube. The amount of product in the tube is still 3.5g. There may be more air/ empty space in the tube as a result of the change.

What problems could my dog or cat have with Optimmune?

  • It may take weeks to notice improvement and see if the Optimmune is working.
  • Optimmune may cause mild burning, stinging, irritation, or redness of the eye.

How do you use Optimmune?

  • Use proper administration techniques to avoid contamination of the Optimmune. Keep the cap on when not in use.
  • Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant. Wear gloves when handling the medication to protect yourself.
  • Wait 5 minutes after applying Optimmune to the eye before administering any other eye medication.
