Neo Poly Dex for dog's ears
I have a 14 year old wire haired fox terrier, Alexander. For the past 3 years I've had a very difficult time protecting the pet from ear infection. LSU Veterinary Medicine, Baton Rouge, Louisiana in Fall 2016 recommended to my veterinarian using Neo Poly Dex in Alex' ears to control yeast infection. I currently use 2 drops in each ear, every other day. I was using B&L drops in Alex' ears until Spring 2017, when B&L eliminated distribution for use in animals. (Presumably because of shortage for human use in eyes) So, I found the Sandoz brand Neo Poly Dex manufactured by Alcon Labs which has the same ingredients as the B&L drops in April 2017 and switched to that brand. With the Neo Poly Dex drops and the use of Virbac Epi-Otic ear cleanser, used 2-3 times per week, Alex is now having much better ear exams and less cleaning every 2-3 weeks to protect his hearing.

Good product. However, it did not stop the tear discharge...
Good product. However, it did not stop the tear discharge of my puppy's left eye. So I am not sure if the vet was correct in prescribing this medication.

Q & A

My dog is allergic to prednisone. Can I still give her these drops? I've only administered 1 drop in each eye and she's panting.?
-
Prednisone and dexamethasone are both corticosteroids and it is possible that she may also have a hypersensitivity to dexamethasone if an allergic response was experienced after taking prednisone. However, panting could be a sign of discomfort if your dog experiences a mild stinging, which is a common side effect, after the eye drop is placed. Signs of a severe allergic reaction could include a rash, fever, swelling of the face, or difficulty/ noisy breathing. Please contact your veterinarian if your dog is experiencing signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction or if you are concerned about the response your dog is having to this medication.

I accidentally put 3 drops instead of 1 into my dogs eye. I flushed with water afterwards. Advice please?
-
When applied to the eye, overdoses are unlikely. The eye typically can only hold one drop at a time so any excess drops would likely leak out. Please consult with your veterinarian regarding any further concerns in treating your dog’s eye.

My cat was prescribed this and had his last dosage a few days ago. I'm wanting to order him an allergy supplement but it says to use caution if your animal is on steroids. How long do the meds stay in their system after the last dose??
-
Neomycin/ Polymyxin/ Dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension is a human-labeled generic medication that may be prescribed for extra-label use by a veterinarian to treat eye conditions in dogs and cats. Dexamethasone is the corticosteroid that is a part of this eye drop solution. When given topically to the eye, dexamethasone is absorbed into the aqueous humor, cornea, iris, choroid, ciliary body, and retina. Dexamethasone ophthalmic solutions are not usually absorbed into the bloodstream, but can happen at high doses or extended time of use. One study in rabbits showed that this steroid can stay in the eyes for an average of 4 to 6 hours. Currently, there are no studies that indicate how long dexamethasone lasts in the eyes of cats. It is recommended that you speak to your veterinarian first before administering any new supplement or product, especially if your cat has been treated or diagnosed with a medical condition.

Hello, Our 14 year old shiz tzu has been prescribed "NEO-POLY-DEX OPTH SOIN 5 ml for her eyes. Is this the same medicine? I was unsure because I did not see the word "Soin". The vet has put her on this indefinitely because of eye irritation.?
-
Based on the information given, this product would be the item that you are looking for. “Soin” may actually be “Soln” which stands for solution. However, please consult with your veterinarian to determine if this product is the actual medication that your dog is supposed to be on. Thank you so much for the great question, VetRxDirect!

Is this medication used for pannus as well??
-
The neomycin/polymyxin/dexamethasone eye drops are typically used for management of corticosteroid-responsive inflammatory eye conditions where bacterial infection or a risk of bacterial infection exists. Pannus or chronic superficial keratitis is an immune-mediated condition affecting the cornea or clear part of the eye. In approximately 70% of cases, the third eyelid is concurrently affected. An infection is a possible secondary risk associated with pannus which could warrant the use of this medication. Please consult with your veterinarian regarding any further questions or concerns regarding this medication.

My vet prescribed this for my dog to be administered one drop in each nostril. What are the possible side effects? Would they be the same as in the eye (i.e. possible burning or discomfort)? I administered the first three doses successfully without any apparent reaction from my dog but the fourth dose appeared to bother her. Thanks!?
