we would like to purchase (preferably with university P.O.) minocycline for NIH-funded research conducted under IACUC-approved protocols. How can this be handled??
-
Cliff, As a pharmacy, we dispense only to pet owners for their companion animals (usually cats and dogs only) on prescription from their veterinarian. We do not dispense for in-lab or in-clinic use, as prescriptions must be dispensed for a specified pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Can I give this to my 5lb yorkie who gets reoccurring ear infection due to allergies I do not have the money to take him to the vet as I am recovering from back surgery .?
-
Sherry, Minocycline is a prescription antibiotic, which cannot be dispensed without approval from your yorkie's veterinarian. All medications used to treat an ear infection will require a prescription. It may be worth calling the veterinary clinic where your dog is usually seen to talk about other options with them. My dog is having problems swallowing the capsule. Can they be opened and sprinkled into a pill pocket or mixed with canned food??
-
Rory, Opening capsules and sprinkling the contents on food may be appropriate depending on the drug. If the drug is deemed appropriate to be opened and sprinkled, one consideration is the animal must consume the entire food contents, or the amount of drug given will be unclear. Minocycline, as well as other drugs in the tetracycline class, are known to cause esophageal irritation and possibly ulceration, and therefore must be administered as directed with free access to water. In general, it is not recommended to open a minocycline capsule t administer the contents for this reason. Please discuss your concern with your veterinarian for administration suggestions or other possible treatment options. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Davida, Medication recommendations and dosing schedules are best answered by your pet's veterinarian. We're happy to answer most drug questions, but as a pharmacy we are unable to supply recommendations or specific dose instructions. Thank you, VetRxDirect

-
Krista, Minocycline is actually prescribed for dogs in certain circumstances. The most common side effect you may see is upset stomach (vomiting) and diarrhea in both pets and humans. Wheezing has been reported as an uncommon side effect in humans. If the wheezing and vomiting persists contact your pet's veterinarian or local emergency veterinary service immediately.
