MalOtic Ointment for Dogs and Cats
>Many dogs have infection-prone ears. If that’s the case with your pup, talk to your veterinarian about MalOtic. This potent mixture of three healing agents helps reduce pain, swelling, and itching due to ear infection. MalOtic is a corticosteroid that is often prescribed by veterinarians to clear up ear infections in dogs. Three active ingredients – gentamicin sulfate, betamethasone valerate, and clotrimazole – work together to reduce inflammation, itching, and pain in the ear. MalOtic can also help reduce ear wax production. If your dog also needs antimicrobials, MalOtic can be combined with them. This medication comes in two formulations: ear drops and ointment.
- Decreases inflammation, itching, and pain
- Helps reduce ear wax production
- Easy to apply topical treatment for dogs
- Choose ear drops or ointment
What you should know about MalOtic:
- Talk to your veterinarian before using this product.
- Follow dosing directions exactly - don’t give your pet more medication than directed and don’t skip doses.
- Read the label carefully for information about storage, possible side effects, and drug interactions.
Resistance is a major concern when giving antibiotics. Resistance occurs when bacteria survive and mutate and are then able to survive even after antibiotics are given. To help avoid any resistance, it is important to give antibiotics as they are prescribed for as long as they are prescribed even if your pet is looking and feeling better.

Works like a Charm
From Dayton, OHComments about MalOtic OintmentWe first bought a small dose of this medicine a few years ago from our vet to clear up an ear infection. English Bulldogs are prone to yeasty ears, but this worked like a charm. I've never used the ointment, but we bought the largest bottle of ear drops when the infections came back and once again, it has worked great. Highly recommend! -

Fast, Easy, Cost Effective AND Customer Friendly!
From FloridaComments about MalOtic OintmentI have a per who needs a topical medication for condition maintenance (seems to be not remedy for his condition). The topical we use does not come in a very large size and is by prescription only. The cost for the topical (although higher at a Vets. office still) is not real high. However, if I had to go to the Vet every few weeks that cost could get out of control (office visit plus topical). However, through VetRxDirect, I can order several tubes per order at a very reasonable cost and pay a small shipping (same charge for a few as is for 1 tube) and find it in my mailbox in a few of days. They take care of the prescription part by communicating with my Vet. So very easy, great cost and service and I never have to wait to keep my pets condition under control! A+++++-

What's going on with ear medications containing gentamycin, clotrimazole, and whatever steroid? It seems that virtually nothing is available from any source--even from veterinarians--except the two products marketed by Merck that cost three to four times more than the similar/identical others . . .?
-
We don’t have any specific information on this shortage. Drugs go out of stock for a variety of reasons, and we usually do not know why they become unavailable. Shortages may occur, for example, when an ingredient is in short supply or a factory is moving to a new location. Sometimes manufacturers are changing their catalog of products. Regulatory issues can also be a factor. The FDA tracks drug shortages caused by demand, lack of raw materials, and production issues, and you can consult their information here: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/drugshortages/default.cfm

What is dosage for each ear?
-
Because every pet is different, we recommend following your veterinarian's dosage instructions. The manufacturer instructs to instill 4 drops (2 drops from the 215 g. bottle) of ointment twice daily into the ear canal of dogs weighing less than 30 lbs. Instill 8 drops (4 drops from the 215 g. bottle) twice daily into the ear canal of dogs weighing 30 lbs. or more. Therapy should continue for 7 consecutive days.

What's the difference between the ointment vs. the dropper??
-
They both contain the same strength of the active ingredients (betamethasone, gentamicin and clotrimazole) that together possess antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties. While the products are similar, your veterinarian may have a recommendation on which preparation they prefer and can instruct you on how best to apply the medication. Thank you, VetRxDirect

What can I use to wash the grease from this med out of my Maltese ears? Dawn dish detergent didn't work. Neither does her regular shampoo.?
-
This ear medication contains an antibacterial, an anti-inflammatory and an antifungal. It is useful for treating acute or chronic canine otitis externa (outer ear infections) when caused by yeast or bacteria susceptible to gentamicin. Speak with your veterinarian to determine what ear cleanser would be recommended for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Side effects of this ointment?
-
Malotic ointment contains the three active ingredients gentamicin, betamethasone, and clotrimazole. Adverse effects associated with gentamicin include toxicity of parts of the ear as well as toxicity of the kidney. Gentamicin is poorly absorbed through the skin however these side effects have the potential to occur, notably with large wounds, burns, stripped skin and with poor kidney function. Notable adverse effects associated with betamethasone include weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and changes in urinary frequency. The manufacturer does not indicate specific adverse effects for clotrimazole in dogs but cite adverse effects that occur in humans that have the potential to relate to your animal. Notable side effects for clotrimazole in humans are redness, itching, and skin irritation and association with blistering and skin peeling. Speak with your veterinarian as the benefits of using topically applied Malotic ointment will typically outweigh any potential, often rare adverse events. Thank you, VetRxDirect
