What is Lantus Insulin for Dogs and Cats?
- Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas to convert sugar (glucose) in the blood to energy for the body.
- Insulin therapy is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes. Diabetic animals are either unable to produce their own insulin or cannot use it properly.
- Insulin helps treat diabetes in cats and dogs by normalizing the glucose level in the blood.
- The insulin in Lantus is Insulin Glargine, a U-100, long-acting insulin. U-100 means that each milliliter of insulin is divided into 100 dosing units.
Why do cats and dogs use Lantus?
- Insulin is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes mellitus to help lower their blood sugar.
- Insulin is an ongoing, supportive treatment for diabetes.
What else should I know about Lantus?
- Lantus should be discarded within 28 days after first puncture.
- Syringes and pen needles are sold separately.
- SoloStar pens can be used with U-100 insulin syringes or pen needles.
- SoloStar pens used with pen needles can only dose whole units. You cannot dial the pen to dispense a half unit.
- Vials should be used with U-100 insulin syringes.
- Store Lantus in the refrigerator. SoloStar pens should be stored at room temperature after first use.
- Lantus is not eligible for free shipping.
- Lantus must be shipped next day in cold packs.
- Lantus cannot be shipped to Alaska or Hawaii.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Lantus?
- Insulin overdoses may be fatal. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog or cat is not acting normally.
- Signs of low blood sugar include weakness, depression, lack of energy, sluggishness, stumbling when walking, behavior changes, muscle twitching, seizures, or coma. It is a medical emergency if your cat or dog is unconscious or having a seizure.
How do you use Lantus?
- Insulin works best when given regularly - at the same times each day and in the same way regarding feeding, such as always after a meal. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Double check the dose every time before you give the insulin to prevent overdoses.
- Keep a source of easily given sugar, such as corn syrup or honey, on hand at all times in case of low blood sugar. Follow your veterinarian's suggestions.
What is in Lantus?
- The drug in Lantus is Insulin Glargine. Insulin Glargine is also found in Basaglar.
- There are different kinds of insulin classified by how quickly they work, how long they last, or when they have peak effectiveness.
- Insulin Glargine is a type of long-acting insulin. Long-acting insulin reaches the bloodstream several hours after injection and tends to lower blood sugar levels for up to 24 hours.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- Lantus is a brand name. You will receive the exact brand that you request.
Is it important for my dog or cat to finish all of the Lantus?
- Dogs and cats may use Lantus for different lengths of time. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.

does the pen come with extra syringes? ..if not how do you order the syringe tips? Thank you?

The pen does not come with pen needles. Pen needles may be purchased separately through our website by using the generic search term 'pen needles' in the search field. Please contact your pet's veterinarian to determine which gauge and length of needles would be appropriate for your pet.

My cat has 2.5u twice a day. If the pen only doses in single units can I draw 2.5 U using my regular syringe instead??
-
No. The solostar pens can only be dosed in 1 unit increments and are not able to be used with regular syringes. In order to dose medication in 0.5 unit increments you would need to purchase the vial rather than pen. Please contact your veterinarian for any additional questions or concerns.
Verified Answer -
You can actually use solostar with a regular insulin syringe. You take the cap off and there is a rubber spot that you can use to insert the needle of your syringe for drawing up the insulin.

I personally have used the Solar star pen for years, and now need it for my cat. What size pen needle would you recommend? My vet doesn't seem to know but says my 4mm Nano 32G is too small.?
-
The size of the pen needle is usually based on personal preference or veterinarian recommendation. The gauge number describes how thick a needle is, and the higher the number, the thinner the needle. For example, a 32g needle is thinner than a 28g needle. Thinner is usually more comfortable for injection, and thicker is more durable. The length of the needle is measure in inches, and is usually based on preference and skin thickness. Pen needles typically come in 29g, 31g, 32g and 4mm (5/32 inch) 8mm (5/16 inch) or 12.7mm (½ inch) depending on the manufacturer.

My vet has suggested that I get syringes that are 8 - 12.7mm in length. What does this translate to if I choose to get the pen? I'm in Canada and have to buy it at the pharmacy.?
-
Lantus and other insulin pens are made to be used with pen needles, which attach to the top of the device. Pen needles are sold in a variety of sizes including 8mm (5/16 inch) and 12.7mm(½ inch). Unfortunately we are unable to ship to Canada, but you may be able to find them at your local pharmacy.

I'm still unclear as to whether or not it is possible to somehow withdraw only 2 or 3 units from the pen to inject (my cat's daily dose)and store the rest for future doses. And - if so - how is that done??
-
Per the manufacturer, the Lantus pen device is designed for multiple uses, and can be given in one unit increments by twisting the dial. Pen needles screw to the end of the device for injection and the pen can be stored for 28 days after it has been opened. We recommend talking with your pet's veterinarian if you have any additional questions regarding any administration outside the manufacturer's recommendations. If you have further questions after speaking with your veterinarian, please feel free to give us a call.

How many doses can you get from a Lantus pen for a cat weighing 10 pounds?
-
The dosage for insulin is not based on weight, but is determined by your veterinarian. The number of doses that you will get from the pen will depend on how much and how often your vet prescribes the injections. Insulin is measured in "units", and the Lantus pen contains 3ml of medication at 100 units/ml so you get 300 units in a pen.
