What is Lantus Insulin for Dogs and Cats?
- Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas to convert sugar (glucose) in the blood to energy for the body.
- Insulin therapy is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes. Diabetic animals are either unable to produce their own insulin or cannot use it properly.
- Insulin helps treat diabetes in cats and dogs by normalizing the glucose level in the blood.
- The insulin in Lantus is Insulin Glargine, a U-100, long-acting insulin. U-100 means that each milliliter of insulin is divided into 100 dosing units.
Why do cats and dogs use Lantus?
- Insulin is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes mellitus to help lower their blood sugar.
- Insulin is an ongoing, supportive treatment for diabetes.
What else should I know about Lantus?
- Lantus should be discarded within 28 days after first puncture.
- Syringes and pen needles are sold separately.
- SoloStar pens can be used with U-100 insulin syringes or pen needles.
- SoloStar pens used with pen needles can only dose whole units. You cannot dial the pen to dispense a half unit.
- Vials should be used with U-100 insulin syringes.
- Store Lantus in the refrigerator. SoloStar pens should be stored at room temperature after first use.
- Lantus is not eligible for free shipping.
- Lantus must be shipped next day in cold packs.
- Lantus cannot be shipped to Alaska or Hawaii.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Lantus?
- Insulin overdoses may be fatal. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog or cat is not acting normally.
- Signs of low blood sugar include weakness, depression, lack of energy, sluggishness, stumbling when walking, behavior changes, muscle twitching, seizures, or coma. It is a medical emergency if your cat or dog is unconscious or having a seizure.
How do you use Lantus?
- Insulin works best when given regularly - at the same times each day and in the same way regarding feeding, such as always after a meal. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Double check the dose every time before you give the insulin to prevent overdoses.
- Keep a source of easily given sugar, such as corn syrup or honey, on hand at all times in case of low blood sugar. Follow your veterinarian's suggestions.
What is in Lantus?
- The drug in Lantus is Insulin Glargine. Insulin Glargine is also found in Basaglar.
- There are different kinds of insulin classified by how quickly they work, how long they last, or when they have peak effectiveness.
- Insulin Glargine is a type of long-acting insulin. Long-acting insulin reaches the bloodstream several hours after injection and tends to lower blood sugar levels for up to 24 hours.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- Lantus is a brand name. You will receive the exact brand that you request.
Is it important for my dog or cat to finish all of the Lantus?
- Dogs and cats may use Lantus for different lengths of time. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.

Good value, easy to use
From UndisclosedComments about Lantus (insulin glargine injection)One of our cats was diagnosed as diabetic and I needed to find a fast and competitively priced source for her insulin. I'm glad I found VetRxDirect. They processed the Rx quickly and it arrived safely. -
Great product and a happy kitty.
From Tampa, FL, USAComments about Lantus (insulin glargine injection)My cat was diagnosed with diabetes last November and has been on Lantus to control it. Once the dose was perfected, he went from having neuropathy in his hind legs to moving around well, blood sugar is under control, and it's really easy to use. -
Great pricing and delivery
From Dallas, TX, USAComments about Lantus (insulin glargine injection)My vet insists on me using Lantus for my Diabetic cat. VetRX had the best pricing and delivery and their customer service is great. -
SO easy to use
From Orlando, FL, USAComments about Lantus (insulin glargine injection)I was terrified that giving our old cat an injection twice a day was going to be a nightmare. This has made it so much easier. No measuring, dealing with vials, air bubbles. etc. It is really handy, easy to set the dose, change needles and administer. I am so grateful we found this site. -
Best deal on best Vet rated cat insulin.
From Portland, OR, USAComments about Lantus (insulin glargine injection)My cat uses insulin twice daily. I recently did more extensive research and confirmed that cats tolerate Lantus better than other insulins (cats have a faster metabolism so most insulin doesn't last as long and causes spiky glucose curves). Lantus lasts about 12 hours in a cat. The pen form is easy to draw from and keeps the insulin lasting much longer than the vial due to the lack of air, which denatures the proteins and spoils the insulin. VetRx has a great deal on this item, allowing a single pen purchase with great packaging for protection and sustained cool temperature and overnight shipping. They also have EXCELLENT customer service. They have found a new long-term customer. I love this kitty dearly and with this she is healthy, happy, and lives a normal life. (ok, except for getting pampered frequently.) :)-

Perfect!
From Sequim, WAComments about Lantus (insulin glargine injection)Pen is just what I needed. I use a regular short insulin needle to draw out the dose, and it works perfectly. Just take off the pen cap and draw directly from the pen. The rubber stopper is easy to draw through, and it sure beats spending $200+ for a regular bottle that will be discarded almost full. I love it! -
Great Buy.
From UndisclosedComments about Lantus (insulin glargine injection)I searched the internet after I got the price from my Vet and VetRxDirect has the best pricing with easy ordering and fast service. Once you have the prescription entered into their system it is a snap to renew the prescription. -
Insulin injection pen for my cat
From Medford, MA, USAComments about Lantus (insulin glargine injection)I got this insulin injection pen for my cat not because of the convenience but because it enables me to buy a smaller amount of insulin at a time. Cats need a much smaller dose than people and a full bottle would last way longer than the expiration date. The pen has about a third of the volume. -
Saved his life
From Dover, DE, USAComments about Lantus (insulin glargine injection)Our Vet had advised us that our cat of many years had become diabetic, he was loosing function in his rear legs. This was the first and only chance we had to save him. While the cost was a bit daunting at first when we saw the results there was no argument that we made the right decision. The pen is clean, easy to use and he does not mind it at all while he is eating. It is truly a life saver and very easy to se once your vet shows you how to do it, much easier than working with a person :-) -

I use Lantus for my cat but she only needs one unit twice a day. Your description says it only is good for 28 days but since I only give her 2 units per day it lasts approx. 3 months. I keep it in the fridge all the time. Does it stay good in the fridge as long as 3 months??
-
According to manufacturer full prescribing information, the Lantus 10 mL vial is good for 28 days refrigerated or at room temperature after first use. Lantus 3 mL SoloStar Pen is good for 28 days at room temperature after first use. Do not refrigerate Lantus Pen once in-use (opened). Both the Lantus 10ml vial and the Lantus Solostar state not to be used 28 days after initial puncture or not to be used past their expiration date stamped on the label because the safety and efficacy of the medication can no longer be guaranteed.

The first time you use it (take out if fridge) do you need to let it reach room temperature??
-
According to the manufacturer, if your SoloStar is in cool storage, you can take it out 1 to 2 hours before you inject to allow it to warm up. Cold insulin may be more painful to inject.Once you take the SoloStar out of cool storage, for use or as a spare, you can use it for up to 28 days or as long as directed by your veterinarian. During this time the SoloStar can be safely kept at room temperature up to 86°F (30°C). Please consult your veterinarian regarding any further questions or concerns regarding this medication in your cat or dog.

Are glucose curves necessary for cats using Lantus insulin??
-
I have been a diabetic for 20 years and understand insulin (Humalog, a quick lasting insulin and Lantis, long lasting insulin). We found out two months ago our cat is a diabetic after she lost 4 lbs. in a year (14 to 10 lbs.) and became extremely weak. We administered Novolin N insulin (from Walmart) using U-100 needles for 30 days. Our cat's glucose readings were all over the map. Nothing consistent. Thus we changed to Vetsulin insulin specifically made for pets. We are using U-40 needles, 5 units every 12 hours. Her glucose levels remain high at 400 every 12 hours, average. I have a 60 day spreadsheet I can send you if you would like to see her readings. Question: Can I supplement the Lantis, a long lasting insulin for humans, while using the Vetsulin, a quick acting insulin for pets? Can you please send me your response to my e-mail? ? We appreciate you being there and helping people and their pets. Thank you. Bill?

Hi I purchased my lantus solar pen on 3/9/18. Kept the insulin in fridge until I First started to use it on3/16/18. However, I did not know, that it did not need to be refrigerated after opening. So since the starting date, after I gave my cat his insulin shot, he gets it twice per day, I have always placed it back in the refrigerator. Because I played it back in the fridge, did I do damage to the lantus insulin?? Is the insulin still as effective by not keeping it out of the fridge, in a shelf. Also tomorrow I have to do a refill. So can you please get back to me, so that I know how to properly handle the pen once opened. Thanking you in advance.?
-
According to the manufacturer, the Lantus SoloStar pen should be stored at room temperature for 28 days after the first use and should not be refrigerated after opening. Refrigerating the Lantus SoloStar pen after opening does not damage or decrease the effectiveness of the insulin itself, but there is an increased risk of contamination in the refrigerator because the rubber stopper in the pen does not adequately seal out air contaminants. Please contact your veterinarian with any further questions about how to store and use your cat's insulin.
