What is Lantus Insulin for Dogs and Cats?
- Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas to convert sugar (glucose) in the blood to energy for the body.
- Insulin therapy is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes. Diabetic animals are either unable to produce their own insulin or cannot use it properly.
- Insulin helps treat diabetes in cats and dogs by normalizing the glucose level in the blood.
- The insulin in Lantus is Insulin Glargine, a U-100, long-acting insulin. U-100 means that each milliliter of insulin is divided into 100 dosing units.
Why do cats and dogs use Lantus?
- Insulin is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes mellitus to help lower their blood sugar.
- Insulin is an ongoing, supportive treatment for diabetes.
What else should I know about Lantus?
- Lantus should be discarded within 28 days after first puncture.
- Syringes and pen needles are sold separately.
- SoloStar pens can be used with U-100 insulin syringes or pen needles.
- SoloStar pens used with pen needles can only dose whole units. You cannot dial the pen to dispense a half unit.
- Vials should be used with U-100 insulin syringes.
- Store Lantus in the refrigerator. SoloStar pens should be stored at room temperature after first use.
- Lantus is not eligible for free shipping.
- Lantus must be shipped next day in cold packs.
- Lantus cannot be shipped to Alaska or Hawaii.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Lantus?
- Insulin overdoses may be fatal. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog or cat is not acting normally.
- Signs of low blood sugar include weakness, depression, lack of energy, sluggishness, stumbling when walking, behavior changes, muscle twitching, seizures, or coma. It is a medical emergency if your cat or dog is unconscious or having a seizure.
How do you use Lantus?
- Insulin works best when given regularly - at the same times each day and in the same way regarding feeding, such as always after a meal. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Double check the dose every time before you give the insulin to prevent overdoses.
- Keep a source of easily given sugar, such as corn syrup or honey, on hand at all times in case of low blood sugar. Follow your veterinarian's suggestions.
What is in Lantus?
- The drug in Lantus is Insulin Glargine. Insulin Glargine is also found in Basaglar.
- There are different kinds of insulin classified by how quickly they work, how long they last, or when they have peak effectiveness.
- Insulin Glargine is a type of long-acting insulin. Long-acting insulin reaches the bloodstream several hours after injection and tends to lower blood sugar levels for up to 24 hours.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- Lantus is a brand name. You will receive the exact brand that you request.
Is it important for my dog or cat to finish all of the Lantus?
- Dogs and cats may use Lantus for different lengths of time. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.

Q & A
-
Can I pre draw my 2 daily doses from the pen for use over the next 24 hours? Should I leave these out at room temperature??
-
A clinical study was conducted in 2003 regarding this question. The study found that when Lantus is drawn up in advance, the solution becomes cloudy. This indicates a change in chemical stability, which may be due to incompatibility with the syringe materials. As a result, the manufacturers of the insulin needles and Lantus stated that they do not recommend prefilling syringes more than a few minutes prior to injection. The prefilled Lantus pen, however, allows for quick and easy administration of insulin doses. We recommend utilizing this feature to draw up your doses. Regarding your second question, the lantus pen should be left at room temperature and used within 28 days once it has been opened. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I see these say you need to buy needles. Do they come with any needles??
-
The vials of Lantus insulin do not come with needles, those would need to be purchased separately. Ask your veterinarian about the correct insulin syringes to order for your pet. VetRxDirect does offer several options for syringes which can be found by searching 'insulin syringe' on the website. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My cat only gets 1 dose 2 times a day The vial should last longer than a month Do I have to throw it out??
-
Yes, the manufacturer does state to discard the open vial 28 days after puncturing. We do sell a 3ml pen that you could try so you're not discarding so much medication but it needs to be discarded 28 days after puncturing as well. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I'm confused about the vials. My cat will need 3 units twice a day. The vial says it has 1000 units, and then I see that it has 100 units. Do they come in 100 units? Because otherwise 1000 units per month is way to much. Right??
-
The vial is 100 units/mL in a 10ml vial, so that would equal 1,000 units in a vial. We do have a pen that comes in a 3mL pen you could try. That way you're not wasting so much. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Hi, our cat just came down with diabetes. Needs 2 injections of 2 units each time. The vial expires in 28 days so we will throw away a lot of product. How does this work. Is the dosage already pre-loaded??
-
You are correct that the manufacturer only guarantees to potency of the insulin for 28 days after the vial has been punctured. Each vial contains 1000 units of insulin so you would only be using 11% of it. We do offer the Lantus Solostar pens as an alternative. You can purchase 1 single pen which has the same 28 day expiration after opening, but only contains 300 units of insulin. Thank you, VetRxDirect
