What is Lantus Insulin for Dogs and Cats?
- Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas to convert sugar (glucose) in the blood to energy for the body.
- Insulin therapy is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes. Diabetic animals are either unable to produce their own insulin or cannot use it properly.
- Insulin helps treat diabetes in cats and dogs by normalizing the glucose level in the blood.
- The insulin in Lantus is Insulin Glargine, a U-100, long-acting insulin. U-100 means that each milliliter of insulin is divided into 100 dosing units.
Why do cats and dogs use Lantus?
- Insulin is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes mellitus to help lower their blood sugar.
- Insulin is an ongoing, supportive treatment for diabetes.
What else should I know about Lantus?
- Lantus should be discarded within 28 days after first puncture.
- Syringes and pen needles are sold separately.
- SoloStar pens can be used with U-100 insulin syringes or pen needles.
- SoloStar pens used with pen needles can only dose whole units. You cannot dial the pen to dispense a half unit.
- Vials should be used with U-100 insulin syringes.
- Store Lantus in the refrigerator. SoloStar pens should be stored at room temperature after first use.
- Lantus is not eligible for free shipping.
- Lantus must be shipped next day in cold packs.
- Lantus cannot be shipped to Alaska or Hawaii.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Lantus?
- Insulin overdoses may be fatal. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog or cat is not acting normally.
- Signs of low blood sugar include weakness, depression, lack of energy, sluggishness, stumbling when walking, behavior changes, muscle twitching, seizures, or coma. It is a medical emergency if your cat or dog is unconscious or having a seizure.
How do you use Lantus?
- Insulin works best when given regularly - at the same times each day and in the same way regarding feeding, such as always after a meal. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Double check the dose every time before you give the insulin to prevent overdoses.
- Keep a source of easily given sugar, such as corn syrup or honey, on hand at all times in case of low blood sugar. Follow your veterinarian's suggestions.
What is in Lantus?
- The drug in Lantus is Insulin Glargine. Insulin Glargine is also found in Basaglar.
- There are different kinds of insulin classified by how quickly they work, how long they last, or when they have peak effectiveness.
- Insulin Glargine is a type of long-acting insulin. Long-acting insulin reaches the bloodstream several hours after injection and tends to lower blood sugar levels for up to 24 hours.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- Lantus is a brand name. You will receive the exact brand that you request.
Is it important for my dog or cat to finish all of the Lantus?
- Dogs and cats may use Lantus for different lengths of time. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.

My cat recieves 2 units twice a day, not 3. Can you draw insulin from the pen using a syringe??
-
No, the pen requires a different kind of needle than what is used for the vial. They attach to the end of the pen and is given directly from the pen instead of drawn out like the vial. Thank you, VetRxDirect

How do you refrigerate the pen when shipping??

All of the refrigerated medications are shipped in a small cooler with ice packs and requires the next day shipping. Thank you, VetRxDirect

We have been buying insulin for our cat from our vet right along; however, they are no longer carrying it. Will you price-match it for us? It is the Lantus Pro Solo Star Glargine pen. We have been paying $30.00 for the 5 pens.?
-
Alyssa, Unfortunately, we can only price match with other online pet pharmacies. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My cat needs a total of 4 units per day (2 am & 2 pm). I am confused with the math on the pens. Can you tell me how many pens the cat would need per month per say and how many pens come in your $79.99 special? Is the vial the only option??
-
Each Lantus SoloStar pen contains a total of 3 milliliters (mls) of solution. In each milliliter there are 100 Units of insulin, so there are 300 Units of insulin per pen (100 Units/ml x 3 ml = 300 Units). Your pet’s veterinarian must determine how much insulin is required per day or per month, as this requirement may change. In general, the period of use for a prefilled Lantus pen is 28 days, because once a pen is punctured (in use) it is to be stored at room temperature (<86°F) and will expire in 28 days. In other words, less than or equal to 3ml, or 300 Units, can be used over 28 days once the pen is punctured (in use). This expiration is followed unless any particles are noticed in the solution, or the solution appears to be a different color or is cloudy. If the solution is not clear and colorless, it should not be used. Similarly, the Lantus vials (100 Units/ml) are useable for 28 days once punctured, but can be refrigerated or stored at room temperature for those 28 days. The vials contain a total of 10 ml of solution, or 1000 Units of insulin. Our current listed price for a single 3ml, or 300 Unit, Lantus SoloStar prefilled pen is $79.99. Our current listed price for a single 10ml, or 1000 Unit, Lantus vial is $253.76. Both products require a prescription from a licensed veterinarian that specifies whether the vial or pen is to be dispensed. You should follow-up with your pet’s veterinarian first to help decide how much insulin will be required per month and what product is best based upon that requirement. Thank you, VetRxDirect

how can the sale price be higher than the retail?? that's not a savings.?
-
The acquisition cost of Lantus has recently gone up quite a bit, causing the price of Lantus to also increase. Because of this, the previous average retail price (displayed to the left of the current price) will not accurately reflect the current average retail price. These can take some time to update.
