What is Humulin N Insulin for Dogs and Cats?
- Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas to convert sugar (glucose) in the blood to energy for the body.
- Insulin therapy is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes. Diabetic animals are either unable to produce their own insulin or cannot use it properly.
- Insulin helps treat diabetes in cats and dogs by normalizing the glucose level in the blood.
- The insulin in Humulin N is NPH insulin.
- Humulin N is a U-100 intermediate-acting insulin. U-100 means that each milliliter of insulin is divided into 100 dosing units.
Why do cats and dogs use Humulin N?
- Insulin is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes mellitus to help lower their blood sugar.
- Insulin is an ongoing, supportive treatment for diabetes.
What else should I know about Humulin N?
- Humulin N vials and KwikPens stored in the refrigerator should be discarded within 31 days after first puncture. KwikPens stored at room temperature should be discarded within 14 days after first puncture.
- Syringes and pen needles are sold separately.
- KwikPens can be used with U-100 insulin syringes or pen needles.
- KwikPens used with pen needles can only dose whole units. You cannot dial the pen to dispense a half unit.
- Vials should be used with U-100 insulin syringes.
- Store Humulin N in the refrigerator.
- Humulin N is not eligible for free shipping.
- Humulin N must be shipped next day in cold packs.
- Humulin N 3 mL vials have been discontinued by the manufacturer Eli Lilly.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Humulin N?
- Insulin overdoses may be fatal. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog or cat is not acting normally.
- Signs of low blood sugar include weakness, depression, lack of energy, sluggishness, stumbling when walking, behavior changes, muscle twitching, seizures, or coma. It is a medical emergency if your cat or dog is unconscious or having a seizure.
How do you use Humulin N?
- Insulin works best when given regularly - at the same times each day and in the same way regarding feeding, such as always after a meal. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Double check the dose every time before you give the insulin to prevent overdoses.
- Keep a source of easily given sugar, such as corn syrup or honey, on hand at all times in case of low blood sugar. Follow your veterinarian's suggestions.
What is in Humulin N?
- The drug in Humulin N is NPH Insulin.
- There are different kinds of insulin classified by how quickly they work, how long they last, or when they have peak effectiveness.
- NPH Insulin is a type of intermediate-acting insulin. Intermediate-acting insulin reaches the bloodstream about 2 to 4 hours after injection, peaks 4 to 12 hours later, and tends to last for about 12 to 18 hours.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- Humulin N is a brand name. You will receive the exact brand that you request.
Is it important for my dog or cat to finish all of the Humulin N?
- Dogs and cats may use Humulin N for different lengths of time. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.

Too expensive
From UndisclosedComments about Humulin N Insulin 100 units/mL, 3mL VialOrder this from VetRX because the price looked good but when it arrived the amount was a third of what I normally get which made it much more expensive. My mistake but the larger bottle cost from VetRX is way more expensive than the cost at my local drug store. -

THE BEST!
From UndisclosedComments about Humulin N Insulin 100 units/mL, 10mL VialVetRxDirect was the best. My vet would not send the prescription so after waiting for 3 days they finally told me so. In the meantime the Insulin (which Tipper received twice a day) was almost running out. I reached out to them overnighted the prescription to them. They had the Insulin ready to go as soon as they received my letter! THANK YOU Katie and Sarah!-

A u100 alternative that works!
From UndisclosedComments about Humulin N Insulin 100 units/mL, 3mL VialWe miss Humulin L, but this is waaaay better than Vetsulin. We have a small dog on a lower dose; so, the 3mL vial is perfect!!! Nothing is more frustrating than over-paying for insulin only to throw most of it away at the end of the month... Great pricing and awesome shipping too!-
Penny loves VetRx Direct because they send her a cookie with each order. LOL

SMALLER IS BETTER!
From UndisclosedComments about Humulin N InsulinWe spent years paying for the privilege of THROWING AWAY unused insulin --- UNTIL I FOUND THIS LITTLE GEM!!!! :) Now, we just replace the small vial on the first of every month. Our pet is REGULATED, and our bank account is happy. Yippee! -

Q & A
-
My small chihuahua was diagnosed with Diabetes 3 months ago. When she was sent home from the vet, the vet prescribed 1.5 units twice a day on the Humulin N. On the instructions that were sent home it said to get a new vial of insulin after 90 days, yet all the information I read says the insulin is only good for 30 days after being used. If that is so, does this product come in smaller bottles because if we were to adhere to the 30 day instruction, we are not even putting a dent in the amount we use before we have to discard and refresh the prescription.?
-
Yes, per the manufacturer the insulin should be discarded 30 days after being punctured. We do carry a 3ml vial but that is the smallest amount that we carry. Thank you, VetRxDirect

We just learned today our little dog has diabetes. So this is all new and a little scary. Can someone help answer this question - how many doses will this product support when her vet prescribed 2 units per injection? Many thanks.?
-
The Humulin vials can be used for 31 days after opening and the kwikpen can be used for 14 days after opening. If your pet is getting 2 units a day, the pen would give you 14 doses and the vials would get you 31 doses. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Does this work for a dog??

This medication was approved for use in humans, but has been successfully used to control blood sugar in dogs. Talk to your veterinarian to help you decide what type of insulin is best for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I have a 10 pound Chihuahua that takes two shots each day of humulin n. Each dose is 0.03 mg. Can this pen be calibrated to inject this small of a dosage? Thank you!?
-
Unfortunately, the pen does not dose that small. The smallest dose would be 1 unit. If you are looking for a smaller amount of Insulin, we do carry a 3ml vial as well that you would still be able to give that dose. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Do you sell only 3ml vials of humilin? I don't need the pen, just the vial. A little confused by the website. Thanks. ?

We carry a 3ml vial and also a 10ml vial. Thank you, VetRxDirect

how many doses in package??
-
It depends on the dosage you are giving. There is 3ml worth of medication in the pen and 10ml in the vial. Both are 100 units/ml, so you get 300 units in the pen and 1,000 units in the vial. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I am having a VERY hard time administering insulin twice a day to my dog as he's fighting me the entire time. It's VERY stressful for him & me! How do the kwik-pens differ the syringe needles?????
-
Liseola, Insulin pens, such as Humulin N KwikPen, are a convenient way to dose and administer insulin. The pen allows you to dial in the insulin dose making it easier than syringing up the needed dose from an insulin vial. Pen needles will be needed to use the pen properly. The pen only allows for 1 unit increment dosing. If your pet gets, for example, 1.5 units the pen will not be able to dose this amount. I hope this is a viable option for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Do I need a prescription to buy the kwik pen? And do the pen needles cost? How long will the Kwik pen last if I am giving 18 units twice a day??
-
Yes, this does require a prescription from the veterinarian. The pen has 100 units/mL and is 3mL so it would last you about 15 days. The pen needles do cost about $25-30. Thank you, VetRxDirect

can humulin be put in smaller vials and frozen to extend expiration. we have dogs that require a very small volume and owners want to be able to use entire bottle??
-
Unfortunately, insulin is not recommended to be frozen. Ice crystals may form within the vial making the medication ineffective. After a Humulin vial is opened, it has a 31 day expiration date. Humulin pens have a 14 day expiration after opening. Human-labelled insulins (i.e. Humulin, Lantus) have 31 days or less for expiration date depending on the product. Animal insulin Vetsulin (labelled for dogs and cat) has a 42 days expiration and animal insulin prozinc (labelled for cat only) has an expiration date printed on the vial which can be much longer than 42 days. Sterile technique is essential with this product but it does have the benefits of having a long shelf life. These are two different insulins so their length of activity will be different. Thank you, VetRxDirect
