***An alternative generic fluticasone HFA for cats and dogs is now available.
What is Flovent HFA for Cats and Dogs?
- Flovent is an inhaled, aerosol medication prescribed to treat asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, and other breathing conditions in dogs and cats.
- Flovent contains Fluticasone, a glucocorticoid-type steroid that reduces inflammation of the airways to improve breathing.
Why is Flovent used for cats and dogs?
- Flovent may be prescribed for cats and dogs with asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, or other breathing conditions.
- Flovent is an inhaled steroid that decreases swelling and inflammation of the airways and can help your dog or cat breathe easier.
What else should I know about Flovent?
- A built-in dose counter on the canister makes it easy to track the number of doses left.
- Be sure to check the dose meter regularly to ensure your pet is receiving a full dose of Flovent.
- Using special feline and canine aerosol masks (sold separately) helps ensure that your pet receives the full dose of Flovent. Be sure that the facemask you use to administer Flovent fits your pet properly – it should fit snuggly around the muzzle and corners of the mouth.
- Ground shipping is required due to Department of Transportation regulations. There is no expedited shipping.
- Flovent is a human-labeled medication that may be prescribed for extra-label use by a veterinarian to treat certain medical conditions in dogs and cats. As a pet pharmacy, VetRxDirect only dispenses this medication with a veterinarian’s prescription for use in animals.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Flovent?
- When prescribed for dogs and cats, it may take 7-10 days for Flovent to show its full effect.
- Flovent is not an effective treatment for acute bronchospasm, active wheezing, or shortness of breath in dogs or cats.
- Inhaled steroids usually cause fewer side effects in dogs and cats than when these drugs are injected (given by shot) or given orally (by mouth).
- Flovent side effects in dogs and cats are uncommon and may include a sore throat. If this sign is severe, worsens, or continues to be a problem, contact your veterinarian.
- Although unlikely, long-term, high doses of this drug could cause “Cushingoid” effects. If you see greater thirst and need to urinate, increased appetite, weight gain, pot belly, skin or coat changes, hair loss, or weakness, contact your veterinarian.
How do you use Flovent?
- Shake well before use.
- When using an aerosol medication, a special mask is usually used to fit over the face of the dog or cat to allow more medication to reach the lungs.
- Most effective when used with a spacer or chamber like the AeroKat or AeroDawg Aerosol Chambers. The chamber mixes the drug with air so that your dog or cat will breathe in the medication instead of swallowing it.

Breathing easier physically and mentally with Flovent
From UndisclosedComments about Flovent HFA 220 mcg, 120 Metered ActuationsMy cat, Killian, has asthma. Hearing his coughing attacks broke my heart. My vet recommended Flovent medication, administered via an inhaler. Conditioning Killian to the inhaler took time, patience, and a lot of treats. The improvement I've seen since starting his medication is priceless. His coughing fits are few and far between and don't have the intensity they once did.-
Killian is thrilled to be spending less time coughing and more time cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies in the playoffs!

Q & A

Why is the product (flovent 110) higher than walmart pricing????
-
Debbie, The cost of any medication depends on the acquisition cost for a pharmacy, which depends on the distributor and manufacturer prices. As there is only one manufacturer for Flovent, that tends to drive up prices. Especially on expensive medications like Flovent, which requires ground shipping and cannot be expedited, we do recommend checking different pharmacies and finding the best price. Prices can vary depending on where you are located. Our current price accurately reflects the current acquisition cost. We do periodically update prices as costs change. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I note the box states 120 metered actuations, does this mean 120 doses? so if I need to give twice a day this should last 2 months??
-
Debra, Where it indicates 120 metered actuations on the Flovent, it does mean 120 doses, so giving one puff of the inhaler twice daily would mean that that the inhaler will last approximately 2 months. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I have a cat that has severe asthma. I am seriously thinking about trying flovent. I was under the impression that flovent would take the place of daily steroids in for my cat. Can you advise? I don't like the side effect of the daily steroids.?
-
Wanda, Fluticasone, the active ingredient in Flovent, has been shown to be effective in treating feline asthma. The goal with inhaled corticosteroids such as Flovent, is to reduce or eliminate the need for oral steroids however, oral steroids may still be required during periods of acute stress or severe asthma attacks. Your veterinarian will determine if oral corticosteroids are needed and how frequently, when used with Flovent for the treatment of your cat’s asthma. Flovent is well tolerated by most cats and generally causes significantly fewer side effects than oral corticosteroids. An inhaler delivery device such as AeroKat may be recommended by your veterinarian as a means to adequately deliver the medication. Thank you, VetRxDirect

i have asthma, can i use my ventolin inhaler formy dog?
-
Robert, Although dogs can be prescribed albuterol inhalers to help with their asthma, we would not recommend using your inhaler for your dog. Medications should never be used for any other patient, human or pet, other than the patient listed on the prescription label. It is of the utmost importance for our pets to have an examination before starting any OTC or Rx medication. Dogs would also need a special device called an AeroDawg Chamber to help facilitate a human-labeled inhaler. Thank you, VetRxDirect
