Artificial Tears
My vet prescibed artificial tears with 1.4% polyvinyl alcohol solution. My senior dog has Type 1 diabetes and one of her problems in dry, red eyes. These drops lubricate very well ans provide quite a bit of relief. If I use them morning, noon and night, it works best. I also have an anti-bacterial eye ointment and another one to keep goop from building up. If I am consistenr with the eye drops, I find she needs less of the more expensive ointments. Keeping the towels for her bedding very clean also helps greatly.

Stung his eye
My dog went crazy pawing at his eye when we put a drop in.I do not recommend this..Vet prescribed this for dry eye.But the dog would not open his eye after this was put in and kept pawing at his eye. This stuff contains alcohol. It stings.I'll look for an OTC for artificial tears.

This medication helped my cat but difficult to remove top.
From UndisclosedComments about Artificial Tears Lubricant Eye Drops, 15mLThis product is helping my cat's dry eyes. I place 1 or 2 drops in each eye twice a day per vet order. I clean her eyes to remove any discharge present with a moist cotton ball then I apply the artifical tears drops. What is difficult is opening the bottle. It is a safety bottle and you are to pressure and then turn. You pressure and turn, turn and the bottle top will not come off. It is a pain to use. -

THE MANUFACTURER AKORN IS NO LONGER MAKING "ARTIFICIAL TEARS OINTMENT". I'VE BEEN PURCHASING MY PET'S EYE MEDICATIONS FROM YOU FOR OVER A YEAR NOW. WILL YOU HAVE A NEW OINTMENT AVAILABLE SOON FROM A DIFFERENT MANUFACTURER??
-
Akorn’s Artificial Tear Ointment contained the active ingredients Mineral Oil 15% and White Petrolatum 83% and was designed to relieve dry eye and irritation. We currently (as of 02/2023) do not have any products with similar ingredients. If you are interested in an alternative eye ointment used for dry eyes and irritation, we carry a product called OphtHAvet, made by Dechra. This ointment contains the active ingredient 0.4% sodium Hyaluronate. It also lists petrolatum as an inactive ingredient. Sodium Hyaluronate has been shown to relieve dry eyes due to its significant water-retentive properties and ability to stabilize the eye surface barrier and tear film. To ensure this is an appropriate alternative for your individual pet, please reach out to your veterinarian.

When will this product be in stock again? I'm getting anxious because I'm down to my last tube and it's out of stock everywhere!?
-
How do I open the tube ??
-
The artificial tear products, both the dropper and the ointment, have twist caps that need to be turned counterclockwise until the cap comes off. Once the cap is off, there will be an exposed opening where the artificial tears can exit the tube for application. Some ointment tubes have to be punctured before use. It is recommended you speak with your vet about preparation and administration of any topical products before use.

We have been using tacrolimus for years on both of our dogs who have dry eyes (ship tzu and Lhasa poo). It's is soooo expensive and getting more difficult for us to obtain living I. The rural southeast. will your product do the same thing??
-
Artificial tears would not be considered a substitute for tacrolimus. Tacrolimus is used to help stimulate tear production in dogs not producing enough tears. Artificial tears would be considered an eye lubricant and may help ease dryness and discomfort associated with dry eye.

can this product be used to people? it looks like it's the same exact ointment which my mom is using. thanks?
-
Artificial tears is available as a veterinary labeled and a human labeled product. The human labeled product can be used in an extra label manner (not consistent with manufacturer instructions) for dogs and cats as recommended by the veterinarian.
Verified Answer -
is it a safe, reasonable, far less expensive version that humans can use without worry and with positive usefulness that measures the same as that company's human version well enough to use as a substitute purchase? thanks!

I need to know the inactive ingredient for the eye lubricant. Is it lanolin oil or lanolin alcohol? There is a big difference. Rugby just discontinued their product with the oil base and replaced it with the alcohol. I had to throw out eleven tubes. The alcohol base hurt my dogs eyes. Thank you. Arlene?
-
The ingredients for these products are listed below: Artificial Tears Eye Ointment: Lanolin 2%, Mineral Oil 15% and White Petrolatum 83% Artificial Tears Eye Drops: Polyvinyl Alcohol 1.4%, Benzalkonium Chloride 0.005%, Edetate Disodium, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Phosphate Dibasic, Sodium Phosphate Monobasic and Purified Water USP, Sodium Hydroxide and/or Hydrochloric Acid to adjust pH.

My dog is blind and has KCS. We have been using I-Drop Vet Plus Ophthalmic Solution, 10 ml (eye drops that come in a bottle) for several years now and love them, but suddenly they are out of stock everywhere. I know this formula does not include the same ingredients as I-Drops do, but wondering how they work in comparison??
-
The active ingredient in i-Drop Vet Plus is hyaluronan 0.25% and Artificial Tears is polyvinyl alcohol 1.4%. Polyvinyl alcohol works by lubricating the surface of the eye. Hyaluronan works by lubricating the surface of the eye, improving the overall health of the eye, and also has been thought to provide protective effects on the corneal epithelium (outer-most layer of the eye). I-Drop Vet does make another product called i-Drop Vet Gel that is a 0.3% hyaluronan product (and is currently available). Either product will help to lubricate your dog's eyes, however, if the i-Drop Vet Plus was ideal for your pet, the i-Drop Vet gel will perform more similarly to this than the Artificial Tears product. The gel will be more viscous than the i-Drop Vet Plus product. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Is there a difference between the drop solution and the ointment? Which is better or are they equivalent? ?
-
Artificial Tears ointment and drops are both indicated to help relieve dry eye (KCS) and irritation. The ointment has a thicker consistency whereas the drops are a liquid. The consistency of the ointment may allow the product to remain in contact with the eye for a longer period of time, therefore reducing the frequency of administration. When administering the ointment, it is to be placed directly to the eye and is suggested to gently close the eyelid for several moments to allow the best application. When administering the liquid, it may be dropped into the eye from directly above. These two variations of artificial tears can be chosen based on preference and how well your pet handles the application of eye medications. Talk with your veterinarian to determine the most suitable choice for your pet, and follow their specific guidelines for use. Thank you, VetRxDirect
