Q & A
-
Can the pill be dissolved in water and given via syringe??
-
Alendronate tablets should not be broken, split, or crushed unless your veterinarian has instructed you to do so. Normally, the tablet is given with water on an empty stomach for optimal absorption. Following administration, give 6mL of water by syringe, then butter the nasal planum to increase salivation. Please consult your veterinarian to discuss this treatment option for your pet.

I was wondering if using a delayed release cellulose capsule to give this to my cat would maybe eliminate the need for such a long fasting period? And wouldn't having it release directly in the GI tract help the absorption be better as well? Thank you for any thoughts/info you might have on this.?
-
It is not possible to determine what effect using a delayed release cellulose capsule would have on the absorption of alendronate. Limited studies have been conducted regarding the amount of alendronate that is absorbed in animals, but the studies that have been done show less than 2% is absorbed. Alendronate needs to be taken on an empty stomach in order to have the greatest amount of absorption possible. It is important to make sure the cat drinks water after giving them a dose (at least a teaspoon). If you have any additional questions or concerns regarding this medication, please contact your veterinarian.

-
Unfortunately Alendronate is not currently available as a 15mg tablet and is only made as a 10 mg, 35 mg, 40 mg, and 70 mg tablet. The 5 mg tablets are no longer commercially available.
