Gabapentin (Generic) Capsules for Cats and Dogs
What is Gabapentin?
Gabapentin may be useful as an adjunctive anticonvulsant for the treatment of seizures in dogs and cats or in treating chronic neuropathic pain in small animals. Do not stop the use of gabapentin abruptly without consulting your pet's veterinarian. Rapid discontinuation may lead to withdrawal-precipitated seizures if using the product for seizure treatment.
Gabapentin should be used with caution in animals that have renal insufficiency. Dosage adjustments may be required. Speak with your veterinarian regarding any dosage adjustments. Use extreme caution with use of an oral solution (Neurontin®) in dogs because it contains 300mg/mL of xylitol. Xylitol can cause low blood sugar or liver damage in dogs at higher doses.
Possible Side effects of gabapentin:
- sedation and drowsiness
- ataxia
- dizziness
- peripheral edema
Report excess sedation or uncoordinated muscle movements to your pet's veterinarian.
If you miss giving your pet the dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule. Do not double up on doses.

So Happy
From Bridgewater, MA, USAComments about GabapentinMy pup was on 400mgof this a day,but we could only get 300mg and 100mg...sadly he would end up with only 300mg as giving him the second pill was not always easy. THEN we would end up needing to give three of the 100mg as the larger ran out. Having the 400mg size is such a blessing. Now he receives the correct dose every time -

This medication can be used to treat a variety of conditions ranging from seizures to chronic pain. The dose is typically larger when treating seizures (between 10-20 milligrams per kilogram every 8 hours) than chronic pain (5-10 milligrams per kilograms every 12 hours). For chronic pain use (cancer). if the dosage of 300mg per day is not enough, can I give 1/2 capsule12 hours later (to bump her up) or should dosages always be equal? I give her 300mg in the morning at 8am and 150mg at 8pm.?

Gabapentin is a medication that is typically dosed based on the weight of the pet and indication for use. We recommend contacting your veterinarian for specific advice regarding adjustments to prescribed doses because this may increase the risk of adverse effects and require additional monitoring.
